For some reason, I checked the chain on my road bike for the first time since I got it for wear last weekend.
Now taking into account it's 18months old and has covered in excess of 5000km it's heavily worn, the chain checker nearly fell through the links ๐
I can accept that the cassette will be borked, but will I have gotten away without excessive wear to the chain rings, and get away with just chain and cassette.
As chain rings seem to be almost as expensive as a new crank it seems pointless changing just them.
The bigger the chaining the more tolerant they are to wear, road rings can usually take a fair bit.
Chains on new bikes are often of atrocious quality; this may be a lesson learned!
I usualy just run my road bike untill the shifting isn't quite perfect, then replace the chain and cassette, usualy arround 5000miles*. Never replaced a chainring. Usualy used 105 chains or the KMC equivelent.
*95% of those are dry though, and the chain's kept celean and lubed, never replaced the chain/cassette on my commuter, priobably should though.......
Ill give a new cassette & chain a go. See what happens
Smiffy - it's a 105 chain on there from new.
