Will the rings off a RaceFace XC chainset be compatabile with something like a Deore chainset (bcd is the same and both 4 bolt)?
Or have manufactures all gone there separate ways on this as well?

They should work fine - worst case, a quick bit of filing will sort it out (some Shimano IIRC chainrings clash with other chainsets very slightly so a quick bit of filing sorts it out perfectly.
