Hey,
jut put a chain on my new set up of :
x9 rear mech medium
11t - 36t cassette
22t & 34t chainrings
x9 shifters
blackspire stinger
The bike in question has 6" travel so took out the air and measured it round the two big rings with a little to spare. Linked it up. The chain has a little bit, not much, of give on the two biggest rings. When I put it in the two small rings the rear mech doubles back on itself and rubs together.
I just want to make sure this is ok as I keep hearing that using small to small is bad. Rather have a bit for big to big just in case I end up in that gear in the heat of the moment... don't want to rip stuff off the bike.
Is there anything I'm missing or is this the best setup I can get with the medium mech?
BTW, I have set the b screw so there's about 6m from the big ring to the jockey wheel.
Cheers
Rob
put the air back in the shock and then put the chain round the 2 largest cogs.
the chain should be taut so you'll need to remove a link or 2.
remember that once you are on the bike and your body weight is compressing the shock the chain will slacken off.
ok, so bypass the mech for now, just run it round the two largest cogs?
Ta
dont bypass the mech....the chain will end up being too short!!
thread the chain through it and put it on the largest 2 rings....the lower jockey wheel on the mech should then sit slightly forward of the cassette. do this without using the stinger to get the length then pull the stinger roller wheel in to take up the remaining chain slack
Cool. Yeah, thought it was a bit weird on the instructions to do that...
From the sounds of things this is pretty much where it's at now. There is a little, I mean little, give in the chain. Could maybe make it a bit tighter, which I guess would give me clearance on the small small. Just don't want to make it so that I rip off the mech if I go big big for whatever reason.
sounds like you could do with removing one link at a a time. do it until the jockey wheels are starting to point to the 4 or 5 o'clock position
Cheers,
yeah, they're pointing in that direction already ๐ Think it's as far as the mech will go.
Possible best to leave as is then no?
thanks nmdbasetherevenge, I've seen that one before ๐
My mech is not acting like the shimano one in this example so it wasn't altogether helpful. The mech is fully stretched at big big, but is too slack small small.
just noticed that you're running a 11-36t cassette with a medium cage rear mech...that could be the issue. i think medium cages only like going up to a max of 34t on the largest sprocket....for a 36t you're better off with a long cage
hmmmmm, I changed from long to medium as I kept reading people saying it's fine. I'm happy to try and not ride in small small, big big, just don't want the thing to go bang if I do ๐
Cheers
I've used a medium cage mech on a 36t cassette without issue. Well done for checking the length by letting the air out the shock. I forgot and exploded a brand new X0 rear mech ๐ณ
Ouch... sounds expensive ๐
Just realised there is still a bit of give in the mech arm to swing up a little more. Just wondering if another link or two might just do it?
Think I might take the air out of the shock to double check.
I'd definitely start with one less. Can you check it as it is by pushing the mech arm forward and bunching up the slack in the chain to see how much spare there is?
Weren't people saying medium would be OK if you didn't cross biggest /biggest, smallest smallest?
All done.... finally ๐
removed a couple more links and its all good shifty like a beauty! Not sure why people said I needed a long mech?
Now to fix up the hardtail, which didn't fair too well in our leaky shed ๐
