Put it in the two biggest cogs, take out as many links as you can. From thence forth remember not to change into big x big.

What's tight is right.

Although I'd be tempted with a 34 or 36 up front...

big /big not thru mech plus 2 links assuming hardtail. If full sus do the measurement when the axle / bb distance is greatest

oliverd1981, on a double you're much more likely to use big/big, and as its in the position of previous middle chainring there's not the same issue with cross-chaining, so there's no reason not to use it. So, to have your chain so short that you preclude yourself from being able to use this combo, and in fact would destroy your rear mech if you accidentally changed into it, is not good advice IMHO. TJ is correct - big/big without going thru mech +2.

However, do agree with you that a 34 or 36 would give more useful ratios...

How about as tight as you can get it, going though mech, plus one link then? actually that's my usual XC setup. Be aware that with no big ring your mech will obviusolly look a lot more streteched in middle and granny as you've removed so much spare capacity.

44T - 32T = 12T
12T x 50% = 6T

= Remove 3 links.

You might get awy with 4 though.
