I'm trying the WolfTooth lube at the moment. Liking it so far, but has only been out in the dry (shows how little I've been able to get out recently...). I like the self-cleaning nature of it. On both Road and Off Road bikes it seems to quieten down the drivetrain.

Otherwise, I've been using Juice Lubes Viking for yonks. Only changed to try something else. Have tried Smoove and Squirt and didn't get on with either.

I've been using Putoline for a couple of months now. Still struggling to see why it's regarded highly. Must be where the bike is used.

This is one ride last weekend in the muddy Gloucestershire hills, and then left until today. I thought the idea was that you didn't have to do anything until next application?

It's fantastic the first ride after application. Lovely and quiet, but yeah. This is a week in the shed.

@chriscubed. I’ve had a great experience with Revolube. You need to follow the instructions precisely, and it just works as advertised.

Re: Putoline.

I've advocated it until now because my experience was that for (let's say) a monthly application you could then ride and mostly neglect drivetrain OTHER THAN a quick wipe down with a rag soaked in GT85 after every wet ride. This kept the chain shiny and clean looking, no gunky black mess, quiet and smooth. Would probably have avoided that horror show up above ^

The first ride after each application was bliss, I could swear I felt the whole bike was faster. After that it was just 'good'.

Problem is, as of yesterday I've decided to stop using it. In some respects it is almost *too* good and you get lazy, which means I've now finished at least 3 if not 4 long mixed rides with a dry squeaking chain. Especially horrible on the gravel bike when you might have 15km of tarmac to get home.

Not really Putoline's fault, it will still have outperformed any other lube, but at least something light and easy to apply then wipe off means you can just apply every couple of rides and be guaranteed it won't wear out mid-ride. I think it is best suited to those who track mileage more fastidiously than me, and even then I think the re-application would be too frequent for my liking.

Have a shipment of Viking Juice on it's way, will experiment with this and Fenwick's Stealth.

Yeah I can only imagine the Putovangelists don't really ride in the worst of conditions.
Maybe they're more talking about commuter bikes.
I don't recall them saying you did anything other than apply it every few rides.

I've stuck the chain in the Putoline today but I think that'll be the last time and I'll go back to Squirt every ride.

Shame though as I bought the tin and a deep fat fryer based on what folks said on here.

I bought a shipment (3 for 2) of Viking Juice but will save it for properly nasty lube-every-ride winter conditions.

Have a bottle and a half of Fenwick's Stealth to use up first, am reminded how good it is!

I'm running out of the old rock n roll blue, I'll give that TF2 a go, sounds ideal.

Putoline and deep fat fryers can get in the sea!.

I've ridden in some pretty shocking conditions and have never had my chain looking like that @kayak23. I do dry the chain with a rag rather than leaving it to dry and develop surface rust though. It's also stored in a heated garage which probably helps.

Yeah for what it's worth (putting evangelist hat back on) Putoline worked brilliantly in foul muddy conditions, possibly the best a drivetrain of mine has worked in mud deeper than your rim etc. and it only took a minimum of care after the ride to keep it looking good. It's only the unpredictable application intervals that has forced me to switch (and yeah, maybe the build-up of black gunk around my jockey wheels, that stuff WILL find it's way on to the bottom of your shoes and onto the carpet eventually...).

On that note - anyone want to collect a deep fat fryer full of Putoline from Auchterarder? 😉

I am wondering if the Putoline users are putting it on too hot and then it's all dripping out....

When I asked the Putoline manufacturer what was the ideal application temp they said about 80c. I have been setting my DFF to 100 and then leaving  the chain in the basket on the top of the wax so it sinks in as it melts. At that temp it's the consistency of single cream so still quite thick.  Also I'm careful to avoid letting it smoke as again, the manufacturer said if you let it smoke it evaporates some of the lighter oils contained in the wax.... I leave it in for at least 15 mins once the wax is liquid, swish it about a few times and then I lift the basket out and let it cool. I get about 150 miles between applications in the summer and I don't get any rust unless I leave it too long before reapplying. Mostly I just rinse it off with a hose to get the crud off it and then I leave it to dry. It seems to prolong the chain life quite considerably as I have just replaced both my chains after nearly 2000 miles on them (combined mileage). I was using Shimano M7100 chains but I read that even though the M9100 is quite a bit more ££ it actually lasts twice as long so the net result is that it's cheaper. On that basis I am now running two M9100 chains to see what happens......
