[Closed] Centrelock rotors - wear problems?

Evenin' all.

Anyone using Shimano Centrelock rotors?

I've got them on one set of wheels and it looks like the rear one has developed some play so that it creaks when the brake is applied and I can feel movement when I rock the bike back and forward with the brake on.

Inspection suggests that the splines on the hub are worn. Has anyone else had this problem? Will a new rotor solve it, or do I accept that the wheels have reached the end of their life and bin them (XT factory wheels so impossible to source a replacement hub).

Follow-up question: what wheels for race bike?

Ta.

my rear has got some play in it too. XT hub. originally with a deore rotor, now with slx. so, no. new rotors won't solve the problem.

won't be buying centrelock hubs again. prefer the swapability and steadfasstness of 6-bolt.

I'd take it to a mechanic at the LBS - I don't know whether the hub splines or the rotor is the softer metal (if either) but its possible that the hub is fine and either torquing it up or replacing the rotor will solve. I just think that it being Shimano it probebly won't be wrecked 🙂

Shimano centrelock rotors on DT Swiss hubs, and no problem.

prefer the swapability ... of 6-bolt.

Really? I'm terrified to try and remove my 6-bolt rotors for fear of losing a knuckle or having to drill the bolt out as the head gets rounded out.

uh huh. but the play is upsetting. shouldn't be there; esp when using exclusively shimano parts...

You've got nowt to lose, try some Loctite Stud'n'Bearing fit on the splines.Don't get it on the threads though.

Cheers guys.

The front rotor fitted to the rear hub has the same play - ergo the splines on the hub are ****ed.

I've had two years of fairly intensive use out of these wheels which is ok, I guess, but I reckon they have come to the end of the line - just a bit of a pisser that you can't get a replacement factory hub. I'll probably use them for commute/night ride duties where optimal performance isn't an issue.

My finger is already hovering over the "buy" button for a set of Hope Hoops with ZTR 355 rims for £238...

🙄

Coatesy,

the rotor needs removing to get at the cones so a permanent fix might be troublesome.

Same issue with XT hubs XTR rotors (and since new), torquing up the lockrings helps a lot, but still a bit of movement.Resited locktite and live with the slight play

Loctite 601 would fix it, and its not permanent, I use it to 'fix' the crap splines in my C**p RaceFace Cranks, a sharp knock or use of hub puller would free the joint.

The rotor lockring has (or should have) a very thin silver washer, this crappy little thing is so critical its unbelievable. i tried to tighten a set of centrelock rotors with no washer and they would not go, they always ended up with a bit of play in them, and I've had similar problems with lockrings that have been removed many times. You could try a new lockring and tightening it to the required torque.
