Why won’t my cassette M770 9 speed fit onto my wheel when I have taken a 9speed cassette off.
Is it because the plastic protector on the inside can affect some cassettes?

Plastic protector won't make any difference!
What make was the old cassette? What make is the wheel / freehub, that you're trying to fit the new cassette to?
If you're doing it correctly, it should fit with no probs...
