[#3485098]

Took my xt cassette off tonight prior to transferring it to a new wheelset.
Problem is it's caked with leftover lube, crap etc.. Don't have any muc off or similar so thought id just soak it overnight in some petrol I had.. The rings are just riveted onto the spider, there's no seals etc.. Hopefully by tomorrow I'll have a nice shiny cassette?? I deep clean my chain using petrol so it should clean it.
So, have I killed the cassette, or will I have a nice shiny one in the morning?

Should be fine, I use paraffin for mine and it comes up squeaky clean. Just scrub it with a toothbrush or something when you take it out.

Probably wouldn't leave it soaking overnight, a good stiff brush and the petrol should have it looking mint in no time. I use neat Fenwicks and a stiff brush, mine comes up like new.

Wee bit of a waste of petrol but it won't do any harm. Better with diesel or paraffin, won't flash off as much.

Well I'm in bed now so it'll just have to be overnight!!
No expert in these things but I wanted it shiney before putting it onto my nice new wheels and wanted to expidite the process whilst using what I had to hand so am a bit happier now.
Suppose I should have got degreaser when in halfords today..
Cheers!

I love the smell of unleaded in the morning kinda thing?
It is my mancave tho! For mancave readas messy, disorganised and with lots of variously oily rags lying about

Hope he didn't walk into the shed/garage this morning and light up a ciggie....

...or was that him who blew up near Leyland last night? Mrs Gti and Gti junior saw it from the M6.

Petrol isn't half as effective as diesel.

Change your car from petrol to diesel, that will make cleaning your bike much easier ๐Ÿ™‚

And you really don't need to soak it, 5 seconds and a brush and it'll be perfect! Doing it on your chain is a worse idea - strips all the grease and lube out of the useful places.

I thought everyone just put their cassette and chainset in the dishwasher when moving stuff between bikes.

Given the price of petrol / diesel it's probably cheaper to use a litre of de-greaser...?????

Thats why you should use diesel, it leaves and thin film of oil behind.

Soak entire drivetrain overnight, wait till the roads get busy, set fire to drivetrain and ride down road.

Diesel has a lower flashpoint, hasn't it? Petrol is probably safer.

(Until it burns ๐Ÿ™‚ )

Some Flash floor cleaner and a brush used here. I can't afford petrol or diesel ๐Ÿ˜€

And quite palatable when mixed with orange juice

I just tend to give it a scrub with a stiff brush and some Fairy liquid!

you cannot ignite neat petrol or deisel, only the fumes.
therefore, if you work in a vacuum you are totally safe.

Nah, petrol flashes off from about -45C, diesel around 50C, from memory.
