Hi all
So with the kind help on the board I managed to sort my son's shock problem.
Now to the next problem 🙂
His cassette (Shimano SX) has got quite a bit of lateral play.
So if you lay the wheel flat on the floor and hold the largest cog at either side and wiggle it - the whole cassette has about 1-2mm of play.
I can work out if it's just loose on the freehub or if it's the freehub loose on the axle.
You can't really see when the lockring is on, so I can't tell what the problem is.
I've clamped down the lock ring, added an thicker spacer behind the cassette, and tightened the freehub.
It's a Shimano freehub.
With the cassette removed there is a tiny bit of play in the freehub but I can't see it being enough to cause so much play in the cassette.
Maybe it gets magnified with the size of the cassette?
The freehub is a couple of years old and not done massive miles.
Any ideas?
Many thanks.
🙂
I had this with a FH on a set of Hunt wheels although I had play in all directions. Some great suggestions on here, and a webchat with Hunt, led to a new FH being sent out to me FOC by Hunt. No more issues. Interestingly, I'd tried fitting a different cassette to the original FH, and despite it being compatible, it wouldn't slide on. Think this is what finally showed the issue was the FH not the cassette. Same 2 cassettes both gut the new FH.
Apparently, there have been a few issues with Shimano cassettes too...cant find the STW thread someone shared. I'll try again, or someone with better STW search skills will be along shortly
Edit: this was my thread on the topic.
Cassette Woes
Thanks Fazzini 👍
Having had the same issues with a wide range Shimano cassette my suspicion is wear in the plastic(!) spacers they use between the loose, smaller sprockets.
Thanks squirrel.
I'll try another cassette on it.
