Any considerations when I cut it?

Should I use a SFN or something else?

Anything I need to know regarding clamping the stem up tight?

Cheers.

if you are asking this question, save yourself a lot of money and take it to a LBS. As you have just described a couple of hundred pounds worth of mistake(s).

Unless you are a troll of course.

Do not use a SFN, you need an expander plug, which should come with the fork.

No real difference with cutting, use a blunt, fine toothed hacksaw blade, put some electrical tape around it to stop from inhaling the dust, it's carcenogenic.

Shouldn't use 'cotter' type stems like the Thomson Elite, you don't want any sharp edges on your clamp either, but to be honest any decent stem should be absolutely fine.

I generally put a load of wet kitchen towel around the vise when I cut it and have somebody at hand with a water mist gun (like barbers use to wet hair down with) make sure you clean up well afterwards because like njee20 says, it's nasty stuff the dust and is carcenoogenic.
You can also get a dedicated carbon hacksaw blade to cut it with, but I'd still say take it to an LBS and let them have the grief.

richc, I think that's a bit cheeky really, what you meant to say was, "You're asking all the right questions, these are the answers......... carry on." I asked the questions to get confirmation of where I think the pitfalls are, based on vague recollections of internet threads past. I admit to not retaining a lot of info from those threads as I didn't think I'd ever have to fit one, but my mechanicing skills are pretty decent.

The forks are Kinesis CX forks, wasn't expecting them to have the carbon steerer, but they do, so want to check I'm fitting the right before I do anything with them. They didn't come with a bung or any instructions! Any recommendations?

your best taking them down to your lbs to buy a bung/expoanding wedge - i bought three in the search to find one that fitted.

Oh - also, you can void teh warrenty on some carbon forks if youdont use themanufactures ' approved' wedge - so your proberly best getting a Kiensis one.
