Just curious, as my ultimate pipedream gravel build keeps changing, I'm now wondering about carbon frames, specifically an Orbea Terra.

I don't bikepack often but once or twice a year would like to strap some bags on, is this a terrible idea on a lightweight carbon frame, or does it just require some judicious heli-tape application?

Aye, just some good taping.

A bag will wear through a ally frame just as quickly as a carbon frame, just tape it and be done

I packed on a light Forme Winscar. Biggest issue is BB sway when loaded. Its bloody horrible.

I rode a carbon-framed Kuota Kross CX frame for 12 years for CX riding and general off-road, it took a huge amount of abuse - it even had the impression of a chainring in the downtube after some nodder I had lapped in a race crashed into the back of me.
I have a carbon Diverge - it's absolutely rock solid.
A little bit of hell-tape in potential were areas, plus removing bags regularly and cleaning the Velcro will stop the scuffing. I have seen carbon frames worn clean through by things like rubbing mudguards - an S-Works seatstay because the guy had fitted some cheap, wobbly mudguard and wondered why it wasn't covered by warranty....
