So thinking about getting one - a couple of questions...

1.) Might sound daft but the images look as though they dont come with any dropouts - do they come with standard dropouts?

2.) I dont want to chenge my forks at the moment so will need a reducer headset - are there any cheaper ones reccomended?

3.) I currently have a 16" steel 456 and have a 350mm seatpost. I dont want to go up to an 18" frame as think it will be too big for me but would there be enough seatpost in the frame or do you need say 100mm?

1) you get vertical (geared dropouts) with the frame. If you want track ends for single speed just contact them to swap. All the bolts are included.

2) you just need to buy either the On One Smoothie taper headset (£45) which comes with a reducer crown ring for normal forks. Or buy the Superstar external lower cup taper headset (£40) which comes with both crown races and is a bit lighter but not as well sealed. On One are coming up with a solution to fit tapered forks to the 16" model as there is a slight problem but this wont affect you at the moment and they are fixing it free of charge with a new upper headset cup.

3) You will need a new seatpost as the carbon 456 needs a 31.6mm post. I am running a 16" with a 410mm Thomson post which I have quite well extended but still lots to go to the min insert mark.

Most of this info is on the on one site.

But you will also possibly need a new front mech if yours cannot go up to 34.9mm clamp (most have removable spacers) and it needs to be a high clamp model due to the shape of the frame.

You will also need a new seat post clamp along with the seatpost.

Cheers Andy I found out about the smoothie headset after I posted this. I am looking at the pick and mix set so it comes with the headset anyway. I was debating between getting a 350mm seatpost or 410. Front mech should be fine as it high clamp and has spacers in it.

Thanks for the answers - think I am ready to go!

I went for the superstar headset, and the sealing does not look good, so I replaced the bearings grease with some heavier duty water resistant stuff to try to help. Then applied more on the outside to help avoid ingress in the first place. Both crown races come in the box so you avoid the extra £20 on one wanted if you run tapered forks with your tapered head tube C456!

I managed a low clamp front mech, but I have a 20" and it was very close to the radius at the BB shell.

regretting getting my SS headset now 🙁 On the up side it is cheaper and lighter.

Got the thicker crown races from On One but they wont work with it. Think I can bodge them though. When the new upper cap comes in they wont be needed but it will be black and my headset is red - doh!

Bit of painting required me thinks!

do you really need high clamp front mech ? Just building my 456 C and quick look at low clamp mech looked OK but still got a lot to sort so not attached it yet

I couldnt get the low clamp XT low enough. When I got it within 4mm of the top of the large chainring it left some slight pinching damage to surface of the frame (just cosmetic). Not every frame is the same - the joints vary slightly on every one so yours might be fine. I wasn't happy with the fit so £19 for a new high clamp wasnt a huge deal.
