[#770226]

I was coming down off the local hill on the road bike at just under 40mph. Three lane main road, dropping from Birdlip to Air Balloon roundabout for those who know the area.

Maybe i have failed to read some revision of the highway code that says it is ok to overtake a bike as long as you don't cross the solid white line? maybe i have missed the revision that says brushing the elbow of a cyclist is ok as well.

What is it with f***wit drivers that makes them think that overtaking and giving less than a foot of clearance when your doing 40mph is a safe thing to do.

I too, like many on here encounter these drivers, though it'm not usually doing 40 and the closes I've come to being hit was by moped.

IIRC it's ok to cross the solid white line to pass a horse or bike if they're doing less than 10 mph.

The only was to communicate with a car driver is by your lane positioning. Hence I ride further into the road than many of my friends who do not road ride regularly. The intention is that cars have to actively 'overtake' than just ignore my presence and 'pass' me. If a car has to swerve/move over to overtake I tend to end up with a bit more room.

But yes, very frustrating and scary to be nearly knocked off by an incompetent driver. Did you get their reg?

It happens all the time - one of my regular road rides takes in a bit of main road which is also a bus route. *Generally* car drivers, van drivers, lorry drivers give me room. DO the bus drivers? DO they u****. I eventually wrote to the managing director of the local bus company (by name as I have a friend in the coach business so knew exactly who I should write to). The letter wasn't at all aggressive, other than pointing out the facts and I even asked if we could have a meeting to discuss the matter.

Did I even get a response? I bet you can guess the answer to that...
