[#3835460]

Seriously thinking about ordering the Canyon Nerve AM 8.0 x in the next few days 2012 spec here

http://www.canyon.com/_uk/mountainbikes/bike.html?b=2565#

Seems like everyone raves about this bike but I can not find any Jo-Blog every day rider reviews only the odd magazine mention.

Anyone got experience with this bike and what do you think, buy or not to buy??? Im looking for the best AM bike I can get for about £2000

Also there online sizing guide puts me on their small, I have never been on a small so thought this was strange i am 5,10" and their small is a 16.5 inch bike

Would love your thoughts?

Bikes are great after sales service is shite. Make sure you order a spare mech hanger with the bike as they will charge you 10 euros postage for a replacement.

My headset was knackered after 7 months and whilst I didn't expect a free replacement they offered me a RRP replacement plus postage from Germany. I complained and they recommend I buy a FSA one outwith Canyon . I complained again saying they could surely discount a replacement and got a cold reply saying they would do nothing of the sort .

As I said the bikes are great and well built but dont expect any favours from Cullen at Canyon Uk when things go south .
I wouldn't buy another Canyon because of this.

Canyon are awesome - especially Cullen. Quick response via email and things get sorted quickly. I know a similar experience has been shared with others on here...

Don't hesitate - get one.

Last years medium AM6 here and I'm also 5'10 and I certainly wouldn't want a small. As for the ride it rides like a horst link four bar with decent kit. I'd certainly buy one again but from this years range I'd pick the AM7 with a Reverb upgrade.

I like your thinking Scottishbadger very much, if only they hadn't confused me offering me a small I would have bought it already!

Stanfree thanks for that really interesting, Im so used to buying through my local shop who give me amazing service and life time servicing / advise ECT that its like I have been wrapped in bubblewrap for along time now. Im not the best at fixing my bikes or servicing them so rather nervous about getting a bike from germany with no support! guess Ill have to go back to paying someone else to do it. The spare mech hanger advice is good I will do that!

What canyons have you guys got?

I'm also thinking about the am8x, looks so good for the money!

I'm just not sure if it's worth the extra £250 over the 7 with reverb. I do like the idea of the bash Gide as I bent my big ring quite bad the other day, had to get a rock and bash it back as the crank would not turn 😳 and bit better breaks and x0 over xt

I guess that is the next question Robhenry85 and Gribs AM7 with Reverb upgrade or 8.0x :-s oh god apart from the carbon SRAM is there really any difference?

would be nice to save a coupe of £100

2011 Nerve AM 8.0 here. 5'10" and the 18.5" medium is a perfect fit for me.

It's a great bike, love it, drops down rocky hills very nicely indeed thank you, and climbs surprisingly well too (was my first FS though so not really qualified to say how it compares to other FSes).

Do you think the extras on the 8.0X are worth it over the 7 Gribs had a good point about just uprading the seatpost to a reverb on the 7 saves quite a bit of money

To be honest I only went for the 8.0 because it came with the Reverb, and they weren't that easy to get hold of elsewhere at the time. Oh, and it was green. 😉

I'd probably have gone for something less stupidly blingy and upgraded the seat post if aftermarket Reverbs had been a bit less like rocking-horse poo back then. So yeah, getting a 7 and a Reverb (or whatever) is a sensible option.

Grand Canyon 8.9. To be honest, there's not a lot to go wrong with it!

I still think I want the 8x over the 7! Just not sure why, I do like carbon so the xo gets the nod 😆

Now got to deside on the white or green

I'm thinking of going for a AM6 for my first full bouncer bike and was going to add the reverb into the equation too. If you take the reverb option do you get the regular seat post too or is it a 'replacement'?

I know carbons meant to br strong but I do feel that when I plough the bike in to a tree Ill break all the XO, seat and crank

I got my 8X in Jan, love it, got this and not AM 7 as wanted dropper post and 2x10 with bash, all the gears I need I actually use most of the gears now with this setup! I am 5'9" with short legs and medium good for me, it has a short wide cockpit, which I like for fast singletrack etc. FIT forks great, can really rail the turns compared with my XC race rig, but tyres help here, the Hans damphs grip and grip, but are a little slow. Hope this helps, cheapest they have been right now for a while due to interest rate!

Karl1824 Good to hear about the sizing I think what ever they say im going to go with the medium, worse come to worse I can return it if I dont ride it surly.

Great little review nice to hear peoples thoughts, I think Im with you on the 8X but tempting to save a few £100 on the 7 as Canyon have a sale on their Rockshox reverb for £200

Guess this is just getting down to the details really got to decide so I can order it and start riding..... how long did it take you to receive it???

robin - my Nerve (ok an XC!) came slightly quicker than originally estimated (by about week). The despactch email and tracking were spot on once it was assembled.

I'd echo stanfree's frustration that common stuff (eg hangers) arent held in the uk - otherwise I'm a happy customer.

Now I already hate waiting tempted to drive to germany and pick it up. Spoke to the canyon team today seemed really helpful said if anything goes wrong they will comision local shops to work on the bike and pay for it ETC sounded good. Lets just hope nothing goes wrong

Hope you enjoy it. I have a 2011 AM 7 with a Reverb fitted afterwards by me. Love it. Very capable, and more of a burly XC than a full on mini-DH bike. Much better at XC than my mate's Remedy and just about as capable when it gets steep. No bob at all under power, my only criticism is that the rear shock is a bit too linear for my liking, you need pro-pedal on to stop it blowing all the way through the travel if you land big jumps (okay small jumps, but big for me) cack-handedly. Not exactly a problem.

I'm 5'11" and a Medium is a great fit for me. I wouldn't want it any smaller though, so at 5'10" I'm guessing the fit will be about perfect for you on a M. Oh, and I have found Cullen's service to be just fine when I needed my spuds replaced under warranty at 5 months. Quick reply and a new set of pedals sent out to me. Can't say fairer than that.

I'd be tempted, but doesn't that require a non-tapered fork as well? Would be quite an investment.

Good mini review there growmac thanks, when I contacted canyon they also disagreed with their software and said get a medium, glad I didn't trust it!

Yet my excitement will have to wait as I ordered it yesterday morning and they still havent contacted me about dispatching it and I guess they will stop for the bank holiday, wasn't such a cleaver time to order 🙁 Im horribly impatient and want it now.

Agree with growmac re' rear shock, however spoke to mojo and they do an upgrade kit for I think under £20, basically reduces the size of the air can by fitting spacers to take up volume, therefore ramps up pressure more quickly through stroke. The guy I spoke to a few months ago even said its that easy you can unscrew the air can on the trail, fit spacer, screw back on, pump up and away you go. I've not tried yet but may be an option if I need to, doing Hamsterley Gravity Enduro in a bit so see how copes with that.

Id like to look in to these upgrade kits have you a link??

Exchange rate means the bikes now £50 cheaper today should have hep off a few days being that it is going no where over the bank holiday.

Got question in regards to what robin has just said.

If you buy a canyon ie today lets say ie £2079 is that how much you going to pay for it as i know they dont take payment untill they have stock and after a few days.

So does this mean if you "bought bike" when it was £2079 then day or so later when your billed, price rises to £2100 does this mean you pay higher price or you pay price at time of purchase like i think?

No you pay the price it was on the day you buy it! I rang up and talked to them before so if you get a strive there is a 10 week wait for it to be built but you will pay what it was today which is cheap.

what I dont like is they charge you for the box they send it in, they call it a bike guard... CANYON it is not a bike guard it is a box! ... certainly not worth £14

Link to mojo site at end of post, would have to ring them to discuss, they were very helpful with me. I had a concern about the rear shock on my canyon when I got it, sent to mojo with canyon authorisation, there was not a problem but they serviced it, said it had a small dent that you could not see? on slider so renewed and returned, all for free. http://www.mojo.co.uk/mtb.html
