Have managed to do 3 out of the 4 bolts up, but the 4th bolt is just spinning. even using the proper tool, i can't get it to tighten enough.

Any tips/advice?

Cheers

Put a small amount of carborundum (grinding paste) on the shoulder of the 'nut', this will help it grip the chainring & stop it turning.

Edit, & you won't need the tool that Buzz is on about.

Another edit. Or a tiny amount of grease & a few grains of sand.
It works, really.

Chainring bolts right? The "nut" part at the back has a slot in it (usually) and there's some daft tool that can grab the slot while you nip up the bolt. Queue skinned knuckles. Good luck.

I'd guess you've been lucky with the other three, and your bolts are a smidge too long(new chainrings slightly thinner than old ones maybe), and bottomming out. Try filing a touch off the bolt.

Is the bolt thread running out? Some bolts stop before the head. I'd try another bolt if you have one in the box, or maybe the nut is too long.

did you mix up the male part with one of the granny ring ones? Sometimes they can be different lengths to the outer ones.

No silly tool with these: http://www.amazon.co.uk/TruVativ-Steel-Chainring-Bolt-Set/dp/B001GSQO3W

And they're adaptable.
And steel.
And black.
