I'd get high Teva Links one size up to accomodate for thick socks (if necessary for your temperatures). Grip is not up to 5.10 standards, but then again no other brands are IME.

I have two sets of 5 10 Rennie boots, one pair in a size bigger for winter.
This allow me wear some thick wool socks for the cold or seal skin socks if its wet.

Super comfy and were good down to -7 during the cold snap we had a couple of years ago.

I blasted all of mine with grangers' shoe waterproofer, and wear sealskinz when it's wet. Not perfect but the best I've found so far (using AM40s and Freeriders)

Some folks recommend Vans Winter shoes but mine are hopeless, they're sort of slightly water resistant but if you hit a puddle at speed, that's it, soaked through then they retain the water perfectly. Worst of both worlds. Nice off the bike though.

There was a bloke on here that bought a pair of goretex boots and had them fitted with the 5 10 soles. Think it costs about £40...but can't remember where!

I've just had some waterproof Salomons resoled in dotty stealth rubber here, http://www.feetfirst.resoles.co.uk/
they've done a great job - £45 though 😕

On a different take, I have been using Inov-8 Roclite 286 gore tex boots. Designed by the trail runners for the adventure racers I suspect. Lightweight, thin but size OK so thick socks allowed, goretex, full mountain sole but work well with flats. Not as good as Teva Links for grip - never tried 5 10s as it rains in Yorkshire - but a damn sight better for wandering around in the crud. Sportshoes were doing a deal recently and I snapped up another pair for half price.

I've been having the same problem. The simple solution is overshoes, but they get shredded quickly and the strap-under-shoe isn't ideal. They also look a bit daft IMHO.
I was hoping the Vans Waterproof Switchback would be the answer (half duck-boot affair) - are those the ones you mean Northwind?
Otherwise I've considered getting Goretex boots, or Nike Air Force 1 waterproof boots re-soled in Stealth. All a bit pricey though.
If only Teva or 5.10 made a flat MTB shoes that were GENUINELY waterproof when riding through puddles, I'd be happy. So strange that they can't seem to get it right, even on £90 shoes.

EDIT - @ratadog - those Inov8 look interesting. How stiff is the sole? Also, anybody know how they get re-sole a raised tread like that with Stealth rubber?

+1 for waterproofing whatever you wear in summer + warm/waterproof socks.

Nowhere near as good as SPD winter boots. But Ok as long as you avoid puddles/rain.

I'm using Merrel Moad Mid XCR - was a bit worried about the sole on flat pedals but because they're not too ridged/standard boot and made of Vibram they grip well n my flats.......goretex too
