If its for your students, I'd say something cheap, simple, with good kit. So I'd be looking Boardman Team (£1000) or Canyon Nerve XC.(£1100-2500)

What? at 34lbs, no thanks. It ticks every other box tho.
Transition Bandit is my wet dream at the mo.

pfff, im not a weight weenie so id rather have a bike heavy and tough than light and noodly. that is presuming the distortion is tough though...

just remortgage the house and go for an ibis mojo slr... very short cockpit... a few small frames knocking about cheap at the mo (circa £1,100), would build into a great bike for about £2.5-3k

Commencal meta SL or scott spark contessa.
Both have 120mm of travel, both are air sprung and both have head angle that would put some enduro bikes to shame 😀
