Must stick to high peak trail as suggested. Probably be less people having to let me past

Only until you get to the braking bumps though. ๐Ÿ˜‰

Yes he gets the message!
But in all honesty I thought in (a few) parts it could contribute to accidents. I rode it as quick as I could, obviously no where near as fast as the gnar dudes above who would have been coming past me in the air! I totally appreciate how and why these areas are caused and the effort that's gone into building and maintaining the trails. On the plus side I had a great day and I'll be back on the 19th November.
Oh and the last section was closed yesterday wasn't it? Looked it?
I shall feed this bitch no more!
Enjoy the bumps ๐Ÿ˜‰

Ok so I don't know what this High Peak trail is that you talk of so i typed it into youtube. I'm very sorry to add to all of this wrightyson but I did find it amusing that this was the first link.

could explain a lot?

personally I do find the braking bumps mildly annoying at cannock but its such a great trail otherwise, a couple here and there doesn't bother me.

wrighty, ever been to morzine? Some days the Pleney DH is like riding down a flight of stairs with the braking bumps.

And much kudos to anyone who takes part in trail maintenance. Massively time consuming and for other peoples benefit.

I consider myself a fairly crap bike rider but if I can get around no problems on my 100mm XC hardtail you must be doing something wrong?

I certainly wouldn't say there's anything 'dangerous' about it, and I definitely wouldn't be demanding they fill them in as I have no real right to - miles of brilliant trails have been built there for use by the general public and you don't really pay to use them other than a few quid for parking. They can fill them in if they want but I certainly wouldn't be stamping my feet for them to do so.

To each his own and all...

i ride within my ability and look and respect the trail to throw anything at me at anytime. Think ST needs to think about laying a nice tarmac layer all the way round some traffic lights a few roundabouts oh sorry thats road riding maybe that would be a better place for you to ride
Keep up the good work ST my only moan about the chase is the puddles when it rains;0)

I have just returned from a 3hr ride around the Chase.

Didn't touch the Dog or Money Trail.

There is more to this MTB riding than trail centres.

However I love the Monkey Trail and especially like the challenges it offers...try the black runs.

As for trail building the guys there work really hard and deserve a pat on the back, nice chaps when I stopped for a chat the other week.

The biggest problem i find is that the sport has started to attract a lot of people who don't care about the countryside or the environment. The litter that you see is disgraceful.

As for skidding.....don't get me started!

Have fun.

I love rocky trails - the rockier the better most of the time. However braking bumps at trail centres are a PITA. It's not a feature, it doesn't make it interesting or challenging in a good way - it's just irritating.

However I don't think you should really whinge about it unless you are willing to get involved and help out.

Kayak23

Nearly wet myself reading the newspaper, genius. Only thing wrong with Cannock is the nobs riding it, some would be better suited to a spade than a MTB.

God Bless Chase trails, a really good center on our door step. Thanks to a small number of dedicated people who maintain them

No problems on my HT ferris wheeler last weekend, had a great ride. If I'm around on 19th I could take you around the rest of the Chase, as said theres plenty more. Stu & the lads do a great job. If they ever started a weekday evening build session I'd be up for it.

Me thinks the guys words are harsh but most riders will make comparisons.Other trail centres around the country dont have the same problem on the chase local materials have been used wich in the nature of it it will break up.Clyxbis the contracters for all the heavy work i would be interested to hear their take on the degradation on upper and lower cliff all this i believe was contracted work and not the work of chase trails. With whats available to chase trails they do a great job but surly has anyone popped the question to the contractor.

I know this thread has pretty much run it's course and everything, but it seems to me, ('cos clearly I am truly ace) the breaking bumps are made by more inexperienced riders, who are often not on the correct line. It's not always the case, but you should be able to avoid most of them.

I'd be interested to go on a mostly non-FTD/Monkey ride. I've done one once that was pretty fun. I can't remember the names of the trails but I think one they called pebbles and another was rollercoaster or something. It passed through that area with the small "jumps" (more like little bumps). It was a good ride.

I was up there today - Yes, the braking bumps are getting bad, but it doesnt stop me - shock, horror - enjoying the ride. If you're not prepared to grab a shovel and help out, don't complain. Those guys have worked hard to put together a cracking selection of trails that we all take for granted.

If bumps scare you, may I suggest a turbo trainer?

I've just been on my turbo trainer for an hour and it was scary. It wobbled a bit and made a noise. I'm giving up cycling altogether. It's too dangerous. Now where are my landscape architects type drawings. I've meeting in the morning.

LOL at the OP

Rode it yesterday with my 6 year old son and my 57 year old father. We are not the fastest but we don't hang about either. We came away alive oh and we all ride hardtails.

Great weather and a great ride out.

Rode it yesterday - it was fine. Nice to see one of the sections reopened - i do miss the end section that was fun.

Only one question really - why aren'r chasetrails a registered charity? Loads of companies asking employees to do volunteering in the community at the moment as part of their corporate responsibilty.

I wouldn't mind giving up a day to build a trail and maybe ride after!! Just a thought.

there's a school of thought that says if you didn't have to brake for the corner, then you weren't going fast enough on the straight.

there is also a school of thought that says if you are a superskillfullninja you can stay off the brakes carry the momentum through the corner using such things as berms and come out even quicker ๐Ÿ˜‰

What does "fast enough" mean? When I ride, it's not a race. YMMV

I went yesterday and nobody in my group of 5 complained at all about the braking bumps, in fact a couple of the lads thought they added a bit of a challenge. Everybody loved the DH sections and most of us enjoyed the climbs. Much better to climb up singletrack than fireroads. One of our group is a bit of a beginner when it comes to riding this sort of stuff enthusiastic but has a crap bike with forks that barely work and brakes that don't work at all, and he thought the DH sections were amazing and had no problems with the braking bumps.

ST What I do have a problem with is the root that was sticking out and caused me to crash! It was on the switchbacks linking the Dog to the Monkey just before the rail crossing. The crash had nothing to do with me not looking in the right direction and not paying enough attention as to what was happening in-front of me it was 100% the fault of you leaving those roots exposed!!! I nearly had my left nipple cut off in the crash FFS!!!!! Do something about it. ๐Ÿ˜‰

Yes but the fun of riding it derives from racing.
In the same way that the javelin contest in the olympics derives from warfare. They aren't actually trying to attack anybody, but that's how it came about.

I do sort of agree with part of what the OP has said. There were some great berms on one of the sections near the end that are now just a series of braking bumps/holes. Yes it's MTBing and it's not supposed to be smooth etc etc but that's not quite the point I don't think. It's not just about riding over bumps.
