I’m currently stay just west of Coventry and today went over to Llandegela and had a great time but the traffic heading that way isn’t great. Cannock Chase is much nearer, my question is does it provide a days worth of riding.
my normal riding is around the South Downs or the new forest so XC type stuff but I’m fine on harder stuff. I did the red at Llandegela with the odd black bit through in
thanks for the answers.
In a word - yes.
It's not as interesting as North Wales but given the terrain they have to play with, I'd say it's very good indeed.
If you can go during the working week and get a full day in, I'd do the Monkey and Dog loop in the morning, get a bite to eat then either do it again or pick bits of the blue trail and go off out and about just looking for trails. There are loads of off piste tracks, and style cop if you fancy a jump or two.
edit, or from where you are, maybe Long Mynd or Forest of Dean. Both excellent, with Long Mynd being an absolute killer if you like climbing !
Cannock Chase is so much betterer than degla 🙂
i find llandegla a bit easy, yes it’s fast to the point of being dangerous but there isn’t anything technical like they have at Chase
I would echo twonks recommendations . Cannock has enough to keep you occupied for a day but the black features are a lot more challenging than the blacks at Llandegla so bear that in mind before you go launching down any of the black sections.
From west of Coventry you are fairly near the Malvern hills too. I have never ridden there but a few on here have. As said the Long Mynd is an excellent day out which can be linked up to the Stiperstones and some of the other Shropshire Hills if yu want something truly epic. https://www.mtb-shropshire.co.uk/
I was a bit surprised of the black sections at Cannock the first time I went, much more technical that I was expecting. Not sure I could make a day of it there unless I went around it all twice. You could alway visit stile cop as well.
If you’re likely to become semi regular then you’ll have the opportunity to explore the rest of the forest.
Our original concept for Follow the Dog (and ultimately the Monkey) was to provide clear all year options rather than keep people away from the rest of the Chase. There’s loads more to do!
Are they still doing day permits?
Cannock is well worth getting acquainted with and perhaps even become a regular venue; I do and live between Leamington and Stratford. You can easily get a good days riding. A bit of imagination helps, there is the rest of the Chase to explore (including some bits remarkably close to the Monkey) and Stile Cop. Most of the Monkey rather lends itself to repeating/sessioning you favourite sections or working those bits you can't quite get.
Thanks for the replies.
Cannock is too far for it to be come regular as I live in the new forest.
Shropshire looks interesting
