[#3706922]

Cocked up, bought all new 9sp cassette, chain, chainrings for my mates 8sp MTB. It's fairly new, it never even occurred to me that it would be 8sp. I've now got to get an 8sp cassette and chain, but will the 9sp chain rings work ok or do I have to replace with correct 8sp chain rings as well???
Thanks

^^ 2nd the above. Why not see if you can get some cheap 9 speed shifters on classifieds or clearance? Unless you're planning on returning the other stuff for refund.

Cheers, I am toying with the idea of giving him an old 9sp rear mech and shifter and buying new stuff for myself.

The mech will be fine but you'll probably have to adjust the stop screws. It's only the shifter increments which will be different, so you'd only need to find/give him the 9spd shifter.

Yep, just a RH shifter needed to convert to 9 speed. Be aware if it's a cheapish bike it may have integrated brake and gear levers though - makes it more expensive.

No issue using 9 speed rings with 8 speed though, even the 9 speed chain will work, but you may as well get the right one.
