[#3843096]

Noticed play in the rear hub and against the disc caliper.

It was the nuts hidden inside the free hub body.
Nuts on non drive side seem fine.

Whipped it off, cleaned, new grease and wacked back on.

Seems ok for now...Cones ok.

Old hack bike with a 09 Deore hub, been under load with me and panniers.

Any advice appreciated. I've never had a hub axel come loose.

Thanks Cynic-al,

I was left thinking it could be some other reason etc.

As long as it's ok.

Runs smooth with new grease.
Just hope I've tensioned it ok.

As long as it's all tightened up properly you should be OK.

Absolutely. Strip & rebuuild. De-grease the axle, then fit/tighten drive side cone & locknut with locktite 243. Then re-assemble grease etc.

I had to do both my wheelsets (both rears, and one of the fronts) using Deore 525 hubs, and have to say, they've been top hole since.

Loving my new Hope Hoops though..

Chives has done it properly.

Friend had this happen on an XT hub.

It scrapped his QR skewer and provided him with a 2 mile walk to the car.

Loctite the drive-side pair and do any adjustments on the other.

been under load with me and panniers.

Seen it on big full-suss Konas with big brakes and bolt on drop outs.. The flex of one side against the other works them loose. Threadlock should deffo help!

I've never had to loctite a shimano hub - I've serviced loads as a mechanic.

Thanks for your help everyone!

I was having trouble aligning the disc pads 2 days ago.
Then noticed some vibration through the frame spinning
the rear wheel - while up in a stand.

Rode 2 days ago and it was ok.
Checked the bike for headset play as I swapped tge stem and noticed
the rear wheel banging.

Grabbed the rear wheel and found 5mm of play!

Luckily the cones are ok. After packing it with new grease,
I'll replace the cones & bearings in 2-3 months.
Will use loctite next time and do the front hub in the morning.

Thanks again ๐Ÿ™‚

No need to replace good cones.

Front under way less stress too.
