I have got these which seem pretty good but soak up water like a sponge. Can i proof them effectively in any way with some spray/wash in?

There are plenty of spray on waterproofers that should do the trick. Won't stop your feet getting wet but will at least minimise the amount of water the shoe itself soaks up, so quicker to dry out.
Get some seal skins.

got seal skins - its the weight of wet shoes that pisses me off. What is a good spray proofer?

Have a butchers at either the Grangers or Nik-wax ranges. Both highly respected companies and I use and mix both brands for all my waterproofing needs.
