I've been offered a great deal on a 36T and a 30T narrow wide rings. Can I use them in my existing double chainset? I'm not really keen on doing 1x9 at the moment.

You can, but they won't shift between the rings as they are designed to keep the chain on.

Just split the difference and get a 33T narrow wide Hora.

the shifter may move it down it won't move it up, you need shifting ramps on the rings to lift the chain up. That is if you can break the hold the NW has on the main ring. They are not for double use, they are single rings. Using them as a double would be about as counterproductive and the worst of both worlds.

Errrr you can put it on it. and use it as a single... you won't be able to shift, that's kind of the point of them

It wont shift.

The chain will jam.

If you had fitted a narrow wide chainring and seen and felt how securely it meshes with the chain you would know straight away it wouldn't shift.

the shifter will move the chain across.

What you believe and what will occur are two different things 🙂

It' wouldn't be nice, the chain will fight back... I actually want to try this now... not going to, but think ST should make a vid, a la top gear, of stupid bike related "What ifs..."

Double chainset were around long before shifting ramps, they make the change easier but they're not necessary.

wot pirahna says, i use unramped rings with a front mech quite happily.

how the mech would disengage the NW bit and align on the other ring however...

They may shift, but no guarantee the chain lands on the correct tooth first time

But it would slip on most likely, assuming it didn't fall off the sides...

I really feel some tests are needed...

Di2 can be programmed to deal with this. An expensive option.

Take the front mech off and shift by hand between the rings
.....is an option if you use the granny gear infrequently

DON'T DO THIS. I lost eleven fingers this way and only have three left. Maybe I should have stopped to do it 😐
