[#4183382]

I popped some new brake pads into my Hope Mono Mini rear brake today. But no matter what I did the pads are so close together that I can barely move the wheel. I've tried bleeding some oil out of the bleed nipple, pushing the pads back to force out a bit of oil from the reservoir and eventually grinding the pads down on the pavement then a metal file. Any ideas? All (tasteful and polite) suggestions gratefully received!

Did you make sure you pushed the pistons in before fitting the pads?

Take the brake apart, cleaned it and pushed the pistons in you may just have loads of crap in it

Are the backing plates on the new pads the same thickness as the originals ?
My Hayes Nines are very fussy about which pads i try to fit in them, with similar results as yourself.

Thanks for the replies, guys.

I did push the pistons back but to be fair the outboard one went all the way in, the inboard one nearly but not quite. They have had a bit of a pasting so maybe they do need a strip down. Luckily I had to do this last year and have the picks and bore cap tools for the job. Unluckily I was hoping that it was not going to be required, me being very lazy and all that!

The pads are superstar ones but I have a set of Hopes and they are identical. Good thought though.

Are the pistons retracting after letting go of the brake lever? Perhaps there's too much friction between the piston and seal?

Yes they do seem to move in and out as I squeeze and release the lever. But I couldn't push the inboard piston all the way home so maybe it is jammed up behind it.

You have too much fluid in the system.

Loosen the screws on the top of the reservoir, push the pads all the way out, mop up the drippy fluid, do the screws back up on the reservoir, job done.
