I got the old dailled love hate out to give to my daughter but the chain has rusted solid. I have oiled it , manged to get the cranks spinning and most of it now moves but there are still a few bits where it is fairly solid
Any ideas?

Just buy a new chain, even a cheap one will be better than a rusty one !

Yes, but it won't save you buying a new chain

I did get a pals rusted up chain moving freely again - a cost saving exercise 'cos a new chain would have meant a whole new drivetrain as it was all worn

Probably spent a tenners worth of gt85 and oil on it and it took a while soaking the chain and working every link back and forth - and I doubt it lasted long.

This is in SS mode? A single speed chain is about fiver, go on, really spoil your child and buy a new chain...

Next question, what are the brake pads and tyres like?

Bathe them in oil as well, and should be alright.

The brakes I can understand, no one likes squeaky brakes, but slick tyres on a MTB? No.

You doing all the graft for him. I hope you were recompensed for your efforts.

I did this for a not so close friend. Said I'd help him sort out his drivetrain and brakes. Went round, went to make a start and the bugger went through to the living room and sat on his lazy arse.

Soak in malt vinegar for a bit to get rid of the worst of the rust then rinse the oil and manipulate.

I've unseized rusted chains for commuter bikes with steel chainrings and cassettes, they work fine. For a better bike intended for off-road use, I'd replace the chain.

I soaked a seizes chain in white spirits for a week, in an old protein shake bottle. Then shook it fit 5 minutes and drained. I rinsed it off with water and then left it to soak in motor oil. Seems to work fine. It was on an old bike that fading been ridden for 20 years that was required as a pub bike. Still working 2 years later n
