I seem to remember that a normal headtube can take a tapered fork using some external bottom cup?

Not a 456 Evo, but a bike with an integrated headset can take a taper fork using an external cup (I think).

nope. 44mm heat tubes can with external lower cup but not normal 1 1/8th.
