Looking to replace my campag chainset to a compact type. It's an old 8sp type using a taper b'bracket. I've seen on fleabay campag compact chainsets that say 10sp. Presume these won't work with my current 8sp setup?

Not sure they did an 8 speed specific chainset in compact, pretty sure a 9 speed will be fine, assuming they did a square taper 9 speed version. Campag and retrofit aren't two words that go well together.
Also Campag 8 speed is getting hard to get.

Edit I tried an 8 speed over a 10 speed chainset and it was very draggy!

You could look out for an old RSX chainset - my islabikes cx built for me in 96 was built up with 8spd Mirage with a 46/36 RSX.

It'll be absolutely fine, you could fit an 11 speed Super Record chainset if you wanted.

Rings are totally reverse compatible.
