i wouldn't aim for princetown. the riding is poor compared to elsewhere and it's probably the wettest part of the whole [s]moor[/s] world.

all the good riding is towards the east of the park and if you're based around ashburton or bovey tracey, you'll have better weather.

you could always try river dart country park. ideal for kids, loads to do.

Hi Stumpy. Not stayed there myself, but have heard good reports about Cockingford Farm - it is in some of the camping guides (Rough Guide and Cool Camping) now though so may have got a bit too popular. I can recommend the area though - we moved here in April and absolutely love it!

Oddly Dartmoor isn't that well served by campsites - there are a few very regimented / commercialised partk type sites around the edge of the park, there's wild camping on the moor itself, but not much in between.

I've stayed at the Plume of Feathers site a lot, decent pub. Right in the middle of Princetown.
Only other places I've camped on Dartmoor are wild camps.

the river dart country park is a good shout. loads of rope swings, death slides, assault courses and a lake. lots of fun. no idea of costs.i remember the place from when i was a nipper. we camped there for 4 days or so ( and we lived in torbay! ).
