Those things in the likes of an Edge 305. How accurate are they? I'm assuming that they're going to be most accurate if you're wearing a HRM?

wildly inaccurate! Don't believe a bit.

I used 2500 on my ride in 2 1/2 hrs today according to my 305, so make of that waht you will

Not alot of use, it'll be very person specific. At best a guide to the amount of effort used, but then you'll know that from how shagged you feel at the end of the ride.

I've seen it say 2000 calories for a 2 hour evening ride and only 1800 for an all day epic (admittedly, without HRM)

It's based on your weight and heart-rate data, but I've no idea how accurate it is.

My HRM said 4000 after a 45 mile ride in peaks today. I'd stick with HRM for counting calories.
