What causes this on a Hope XC freewheel? On two sides, 3rd side unaffected, springs and pawls were fine and un place. Hub rattles but only in one place in rotation when free wheeling, move crank position and it stops

where the pawls hit as you freewheel

ie the ratchet effect as it hits - lie a water drop on on a stone eventually you get erosion from the tiny impacts?
note it is regular and once caused the effect will be exacerbated
i am guessing but seems plausible

I've had this with a Bulb hub running a 12mm bolt through.

Basically, the axle broke, which resulted in freehub play and corresponding wear as the freehub body impacted the ratchet within the hub itself. A couple of instances of this flattened the ratchet and I had about 30 degrees of no engagement, which made trackstands difficult.

If I were you I'd strip the hub, check the axle and replace if necessary. If everything is tickety boo there, then it's probably down to bearing wear so it's worth replacing these while you're at it as a matter of course.

If you do have any "dead" spots where the hub doesn't engage then it's more than likely that the hub ratchet has died, in which case you're out of luck as Hope don't hold spares.

If there's no "dead" spots then just use until it dies I guess.

Are you the original owner from new?

looks like it's been gripped with mole grips at some point, for whatever reason.

Would certainly explain only having the marks on 2 out of the 3 sides

Looks like a bearing has failed and allowed the freehub body to come into contact with the ratchet ring. New bearings and file off the burrs. If the ratchet ring is okay, all will be fine. If the ratchet ring is damaged, you might have trouble getting it replaced. Some people have suggested that betd can help with ratchet rings though.
