The wife needs a long one (phnar phnar) to be able to lock her new bike to window bars behind work premises in a private car park - not ideal but U-lock won't do it.
Padlock/ type or combination?
What's a good balance between security and budget of £30?

i honestly wouldn't bother. Cable locks are just rubbish for security. They are so easy to cut through

Worth going ULock + Cable?

If the get through the cable they have to carry the bike rather than ride it away.

I quite like the Abus range - this one is Silver rated.

This looks pretty good - like the idea of the barstewards having to carry it (if the worst happens) as it's heavier than Jupiter.

I've seen threads on here about tredz though…avoid or ok?

Personally, if Evans have them in stock I would print the Tredz price off and get Evans to price match. Lots easier than waiting for Tredz to tell you they haven't got them after waiting a week......

if it's going to live at work - motorbike chain and lock

this may well be stronger than the bars it is locked to so a determined toerag may hacksaw the window bars....

I got one of these the other day http://www.tredz.co.uk/.OnGuard-Pitbull-Lock-Shackle-U-Lock-Plus-Cable-Gold-Sold-Secure-Rating_61144.htm
Gold rating, seems very good, though I've yet to use it.
Got it from Tredz, delivered with no problems in 2 days.
If you like them on Facebook, they give you a 10% discount as well 😀

Well well what a surprise.

Tredz have come up trumps - as feared.

Site said lock in stock so ordered.
Just got email saying they are waiting for it to come from suppliers and I should get it next week.
3 days after I ordered it. This is 2 days after I had an email saying it was on it's way.

Sent a scathing email back - will never use again. Absolute crap service.

Update - I had an apologetic email saying they had system problems and the lock had in fact been despatched. Just arrived - nice bit of kit too.

Your d lock isnt secure either though cynic-al.

The only truely secure place is under your arse. Anything else is just feel good factor.

The advent of the battery powered disk cutter being cheap enough for the determined scrote means i dont leave any bike of value in plain sight out of my view for long time at all. Let alone leaving it at a pre determined place in routine every day....

Beater bike ftw for security.

And even that's not 100%...
