[#951195]

I've been looking at a few bikes hoping to pick up an '09 cheap. The main two were the Trek EX8 and probably second choice a Fisher HiFI Pro. I'm borderline size on the EX8 and can only find 18.5 new but seen a 19.5 secondhand. I've heard of cables wearing holes in frames along with impact cracks so I'm inclined to but new and have warranty cover. What's the general consensus on buying used?

Secondhand so long as you can check it first or trust the seller

You get a lot more bike for your money secondhand

Def some bargains to be had. I got lifetime frame warranty with Specialized but some are only a year or two anyway.

Main think I would be concerned about would be the suspension - whether it needed servicing etc.

Thanks for thoughts, but this thread doesn't inspire me with confidence...

but how many has that happened to...

second hand, especially on here, is fantastic - (most, by far the majority) people have a community concience - i.e. they aren't going to rip you off. I've built some great bikes from parts on here.

Prices seem to vary a lot on ebay. Popular stuff goes for way more than it should. 2nd hand Orange Five frames might fetch up to 7-800 quid for example, even though they might be 2 years old and in need of a shock service (100 quid). Theres still bargains, but you have to search a bit harder and be less selective.

Second hand for some things but for more expensive items like wheels, frames and forks I've always gone new. I think Trek have a lifetime warranty. A friend cracked a chainstay on a fuel ex 6 and got it replaced for free even though the frame ws over a year old.

Warranty on Forks if worthwhile. I've used it and I know of people who bought second hand who got duff pairs. W
