I need a new mtb helmet but there are so many out there.

Are some makes better than others or is it a case of just getting the one you like the look of that is within your budget.

Any of you got a recommendation, i wont state budget as i am curious to see whether there is a trend of comfiness etc.

some brands fit some heads better than others, so try a few on in real life if you can

i get on with 'giro' and currently have a nice 'uvex' xp100

more money usually means lighter or better looking IME

Wot Soobalias said. Forget brands and marketing bollockspeak. Try a load, you'll be amazed at how many don't actually fit that well - which you'll realise when you find the one that does.

Having written off a Giro in a crash earlier this year I tried allsorts (fox Flux, 661 Recon, Met, Kali, Bell) and ended up with........a Giro Hex. Nothing to do with brand loyalty, everything to do with fit.

fit is crucial. One with a variety of shell sizes is better than using a cradle to take up slack.

You are better with a cheap one that fits well than an expensive one that does not - they are all basically the same in terms of protection - differences are minor

Try before you buy

All the above, Giro fit me better than Bell or Met so I have a Giro Havoc.

THIS!

Best helmet I ever had was a Met Anaxagore. I left it on a train....and bought another. Then I lost that and I could never get another. Nothing has ever been as comfy.

one of my lids doesnt work well with the earphones that i use for commuting,

so test the options wearing your headphones, sun glasses, headscarf etc

Kask k10 will fit you what ever your head size thanks to their double linked design. This is an expensive helmet (for me anyway), but it is so much more comfortable and more secure than any other I tried on.

Thoroughly recommend them, they do a cheaper version which doesn't come with the synthetic leather strap.

Helmet advice from TJ!?

I had a budget of £60 on my last purchase and bought the £24 Specialized helmet at Evans due to fit. I've had another entry level Spesh lid, the newer ones have the 'mouth vent' across the forehead. My previous Fox transition was ok, Giro transfer (again a cheapy) was the first.

Spesh lids seem to be the right shape for me. I had a Bern but it was too narrow (online shopping fail). I'd like something that looked a little nicer, but then again a helmet looks like a helmet!

Try before you buy.....then buy online! Also consider if you will be wearing a beanie/buff/earwarmer underneath. The cheaper one size fits all helmets tend to have enough room for accessories.
