Wow, and I was surprised this morning when the gentleman in front of me driving a Porsche SUV extended his arm out of the window and emptied the steaming remains of a hot drink out of his mug onto the central reservation.

Drinking a hot drink! Out of a MUG! While piloting about 3 tonnes of metal!

Thankfully, the 'rush hour' is a very rare phenomenon for me. I couldn't take it on a daily basis.

No harm done, the "what if" taliban may think different though...

I've said on here before I think, but on my Glasgow -> Edinburgh commute I've witnessed loads of crazy things. One woman giving herself a haircut at 80mph in the middle lane (scissors one hand, brush in the other using the rear view mirror to see what she was doing) whilst steering with her knee. A driver watching hardcore porn, another watching cartoon porn. And there was the driver using TWO mobile phones at once.

There was also a guy filling in some form of sales ledger that came close to killing me when I was on the CBR... only a lay by on the m8 Lanark slip saved me. He then called me names and threatened to "finish the job" when I shouted that he could have killed me. That didn't end well for him.

Edinburgh was always far worse for this sort of thing than Glasgow (IME). No idea why.

Regularly saw drivers reading behind the wheel too.

So, in general, eating cereal at the wheel is OK and *shoudn't* be an offence?

In some ways I agree with you - a "no harm done" blanket law might not be a bad idea, as long as the corollary of that is that if harm *is* done you go to jail for murder.

Piloting 1 1/2 tonnes of metal around a shared space should demand some form of attention. And showing a little respect for the safety of others using the road is more important (IMO) than necking some cereal. Is his hunger more important than other peoples safety?

Pfffft, seen a woman on the M4 doing probably 60mph with a white cereal bowl in one hand balanced in the middle of the steering wheel and a spoon in the other. Also another woman doing her eye make up in the car behind me using the mirror in the visor. I was doing 70, she was gaining on me.......

Which is why the "big sword" analogy isn't as hysterical as it sounds:
If I swung a big sword about in the street but didn't hit anyone then I'd still be arrested, because I was making people feel that it was unsafe to walk down the street.

kids dont give a flying **** about going out anyway they would rather be wedged to their ipads safely tucked up at home watching you tube videos of cyclists nearly getting run over ,so essentially theres no harm done there

That's gross weight.

I know, don't seem to list kerb weight and max laden weight which I assume is 'gross'. I guess about 1100-1300ish + driver etc. What's 2-300kg when comparing to a pedestrian or cyclist?

Kerb weight was less than 1.1 ton, so still 10-15 times more than a bike even if driven by a stick insect with no luggage. Does seem bloody heavy for a small car, remember my Seicento being 700kg.

i think there is a case in court at the mo.after a lad was allegedly called some rude names by some other lads came back with his car ran them down using car as a weapon. I wonder how that will go in comparison with using a car as a weapon against a cyclist? might it set a positive precedent.
