in summer i'd head out without the backpack and all it's associated crap. i would enjoy the freedom of being out on the bike with just a water bottle and a saddle bag full of the necessities (tube, pump, snack, smokes), but what with winter now upon us i'm back to using the backpack. i'm now lugging around the odds and sods that we deem necessary and no longer have that feeling of just hoping on the bike.

so, does anyone here resort to using a bumbag (or fanny pack (s****) if you're a sep) in winter? i know 'back-in-the-day' people used to, but now?

god i'm bored.

yup. I've got a bagaboo one and wear it on my commute - holds a merino jumper, toolkit, phone, wallet and toolkit. Cost all of £20 and well recommended!

EDIT: Link to their site here although I got mine from Velorution in London hence the slight premium 🙂

I use one quite often, find them good for enduro type events. Don't notice I'm wearing the thing really, certainly much less than something on my back.

If a bum bag is even vaguely full, I find the strap pulls into my stomach.

Water bottles in cages, tools/tubes in saddle bag, other stuff in jersey pockets. For longer rides, when I want to take more stuff, I find that I barely notice a small rucksack, provided it's only used for extra layers and such.

I'm going to try to get hold of a frame bag for next year though. Like one of these: http://www.jandd.com/detail.asp?PRODUCT_ID=FFP

Frame bag looks good, I bought a real cheap on that fits in the rear of the tringle, or at least it should have, but didnt fit a sloping top tube too well..

I just make sure I have a shirt with big pockets in the back and or a saddlebag, but my rides are rarely over a couple of hours.

The ones at the back of the frame are wrong 🙂

I've used the Deuter Nordic 300 waist bag quite happily for most of my day rides, combined with a couple of caged bottles and jersey pockets I find I don't need any more space, summer or winter.........

Ha ha, maybe, your not style police are you? 😉

What got me thinking was just how dumb a place the back of the saddle was for a pack, handy as lots of ways to strap it on, but its right in the line of muck off the tyre so wondered about a frame bag but was too tight to try a decent one!
