Was going to idle away an hour or so speccing the perfect bike for my commute (8 miles, half road/half bridleway, a few short sharp hills each way). But a quick google reveals some bugger's already gone and built it for me! http://budnitzbicycles.com/bicycle/no-2-titanium
checklist (basically exactly what I had in mind!)
* Singlespeed Gates carbon drive (low maintenance)
* Ti or carbon (low weight cos of those blummin hills)
* Rack/guard mounts (so I can carry my lunch and not get too muddy)
* Big fat slicks (so it's well comfy)
* Looks awesome
The only thing I'd change I think would be brakes (Hope Race Evo X2), maybe drops instead of flat bar and probably dynohub. Really love the attention to detail on the bike! Just got to hope someone gives me $5k for Chrimbo now.
yeah bikesnobnyc had one on test a while back
CREAK!
hmmm not good, my perfect bike must be silent, like a titanium ninja
EDIT: just had a look at the other brands bikesnobnyc recommended (Seven & Firefly). Nice bikes, but I really like the curved top tube of the Budnitz. Anyone else make one in Ti like that (creak optional)?
Hello all. Thank you for the questions.
Our bicycles are extremely quiet. We did loan a bicycle to bikesnob a while back, because we love him so much, with SRAM BB7 disk brakes on them. It came straight out of shipping box and it's my understanding that the pads just needed aligning. Once done it was silent.
We can build up any of our bikes with hydraulic brakes, though some frame models and some brake models aren't compatible... though most are.
In any case, we offer a return policy on all of our bikes and lifetime warranty if they don't meet expectation. We even have a free theft replacement policy. We haven't had a single return yet, and sold over 200 bicycles last year.
Give us a ring at 303-647-9197 if you have any questions. We're a small company and every bike is put together for the customer.

Budnitz Bicycles
Budnitz led me to believe that I could be utterly clueless about bicycles yet have a completely trouble-free riding experience just as long as I was prepared to spend a whole lot of money, but in the end the opposite was true. Certainly this is possible, but only if the people who are selling the bikes know a whole lot more than their customers. In this case, however, it seems the Budnitz people actually know less than their customers, which is pretty scary if you really think about it. So, if you're willing to spare no expense for an absurdly expensive titanium city bike for some reason, just buy yourself a Seven or a Firefly and be done with it.
I know who I'd believe.
