[Closed] Budget way to stash in steerer

I was wondering if anyone had used an expander carbon steerer plug and plugged up the bottom of their steerer (say with an old star nut) and then used it to stash their co2 cartridges and pump?

Yes it would need a 5mm allen key access to get to your pump but taking out the expander once your stem is set won't adjust your handlebars and seems like a super budget friendly way to get some extra storage.

Have also seen the Fork Corks too (I'm still on a straight steerer and I don't think that make them for 1 1/8th).

Currently I have, tools in hollowtech axle, chain breaker in one bar end and plugs in the other I'm just short a co2 pump to be able to go out for short rides without anything else.

I know the EDC tool is amazing but I'm reluctant to splash out on the EDC yet...

where are you storing the 5mm hex key?

Just bite the bullet and get EDC

You could just buy the EDC top cap, comes with a plug for the bottom of the fork, you' need to get the fork tapped, but you can bung whatever you want into the space after that. Might be a bit rattly though.

The EDC is really very good and worth the cash, the EDC pump can also be used to store CO2 cartridges also, you can fit it to a bottle mount and it's really good too.

5mm hex key is on the tool in my hollowtech crank.

I just measured the ID of my steeerer and it is 24.1mm which is .15mm too small for EDC.
I'm guessing this is prohibitive to be able to tap the thread.

So for the sake of convenience if you get a puncture you now have to get a tool out of your crank, remove the front wheel, wipe the muck off the fork crown, and open the steerer bung to get the pump. I'm not really seeing the convenience here!

What's wrong with a pump the that clips to the bottle cage!

I can see some appeal of a bike with nice clean lines and in easily stashed hidden tools, but you're just making life difficult for yourself.

Pump on bottle cage, CO2, tool and small spares in a tiny tiny saddle bag clipped to the rails not the post. Spare tube if necessary held on the frame with a £1 Velcro strap.

This fashion for spending £hundreds on tools you can only use on one bike is getting out of hand!

To answer a few points which probably don't apply to everyone.

I only have one bike, so not too worried about the only use on one bike.

I like the clean lines - this is totally aesthetic.

I've had several pumps attached to bottle cage which have failed because of the sand and grit that has been thrown at them.

The process would go, get tool out of cranks, undo expander plug (in top of steerer), take pump out of steerer. It wouldn't involve removing the front wheel but I understand that it may be slower than taking one off the frame or digging in a pack to find it.

I have one MTB. 50 quid isn't hundreds, it's about the price of a decent multi tool with similar amount of kit, not much more really.

And saddle bags look a bit last of the summer wine. 🙂

I have one EDC tool I use across three bikes, it's a great little thing. Sometimes ride with rucksack, sometimes a waist pack, sometimes no pack at all, but the tool is always there, and if I take a different bike, the big hole int he stem always reminds me to grab the tool

I dunno, a Topeak Hexus has all the same tools, and costs about 1/3 that. And its the most expensive multitool Ive got (a lezyne one that came free in a backpack, and I think my other was a free gift with an MBR sub circa 2002).

AliExpress are ahead of the curve for once. I present to you next years most wanted accessory, for people who want neither stuff in their pockets, visible or making their bikes heavier. The SWAT plug.

Compatible saddle sold separately.
