Despite my loving maintenance routine* my rear shock has some issues
It packed up on Garburn descent and basically it feels like the wheel has hit a big rock square on and you will get a puncture - big hit clunk feel
On the up - well I had to ride home it pogos on the slightest bump
It is also covered in oil
It still holds air as i checked that
Now even my limited ** mechanical skills realise its broken so the questions are
1. Likely cause?
2. is it worth fixing?
3. Can I do it myself
Many thanks
* it is not broken do nothing to it
** they are not actually limited but I decide the cost of a service was sufficiently high I would ride it till it broke - this was 5 years
Sounds like the rebound circuit is faulty. Mine is starting to go as well. I think it's non user servicable so will probably need sending off for service/fix..
I'm about to go on a google mission to see if I'm wrong though as I don't like paying!!
Let me know what you find out though I suspect its as cheap to get another [ second hand shock
That didnt take long. Found this:

Which gives instructions on a full rebuild but requires access to nitrogen to refill.
but it gives the option of a DIY schraeder valve to just refill it with air instead.

I'm tempted to try. Could just send the bits in to a tuning company it it goes wrong I suppose! 🙂
bookmarking this thread as this method looks a lot better than the one I used last time (trial and error)!
Sounds like the o-ring that seals the rebound circuit at the rebound dial / propedal lever has gone. Had this happen on a total of 4 RP23's and requires fixing by someone like TF as I believe it needs the nitrogen chamber to be recharged.
The ones on my rentals all oddly seemed to go while proped up outside the end of ride café, leaving a big oil patch on the pavement, much to the café owners amusement!
My links seem to have gone abit wrong there but you get the jist...
Potdog, the process basicaly shows what TF etc will do to fix your shock. So for the patient and competant it is possible to do yourself.
I might try it. At worst I'll be sending a box of bits to a tuning company! 🙂
If you do decide to have a go yourself then make sure you release any change from the nitrogen chamber before doing anything in the damping circuit.
It sounds like a seal for one of either the rebound or compression rods has failed.
I got a shock to fix off someone the other months and he said "the pro pedal lever is not working":

He had had a go himself too!
Gas leak/seal failure.
Full service should sort it out 😉
Funnily enough this has just happened to the RP23 on my wife's Orange 5. I rode it last night whilst she test-rode a Santa Cruz 5010 & it felt like one of the pivots or bushings was gone or really loose. About midway through the stroke. Pro-pedal has stopped working too. Was only serviced fairly recently, so back it goes.
Annoyingly I'm only getting it sorted to be able to sell the Five (she's sold on the 5010!).
I have an RP23 on a Reign frame I'm trying to sell (cheaply) I am not capable of removing it and I am guessing that a collection from Southampton isn't an option JY
this happened to me a couple of years back. Sent it to LOCO and it was repaired as part of a service I think. It certainly wasn't expensive to get fixed and not worth buying a new shock...unless you want one that is.

I will e-mail you, so I will get the answer next week 😉
Jam mine is 190 and 50 mm so it depends on what you have
Surely you can undo the bolts
