I was adjusting the barrel adjuster to take up some cable stretch but someone managed to snap it off, now it just spins freely without making any change to the indexing.
However, i managed to set up the indexing using the pinch bolt on the deraileur and now everything seems to shift alright. Would breaking off the barrel adjuster have any other effect on the shifter other than not being fine tune the cable tension?
I'm heading up dartmoor tomorrow and i don't want to be stranded up there with basically a singlespeed!
And long term would it be alright, or do i need a new shifter?
short term fine but as you cant adjust for stretch or fine tune you will get some skipping. How long this takes who knows. i would ride it tbh and order put up a wanted for a new bolt
hmm, it would be a lot more tedious but would it be possible to make those adjustments via the pinch bolt?
I had a look and can't find any uk stockists of barrel adjusters or even just a right hand shifter.
I'm also planning on getting a new slx 2x10 groupset when it appears on merlin or bike-discount so i'm not too keen on buying a pair of shifters that i'm going to replace in a few months, especially as the front one is fine
Just ask around mates / bike-shop and find someone with a broken shifter you can steal the adjuster off.
For that matter, drop me an email and I'll send you one! Might take me a couple of days to get round to it though.
How far down the thread is it broken?
They normaly only snap when they're wound a fair way out.
If that's the case remove the broken bit and you should be left with enough thread to screw it back in and still have some adjustment.
but would it be possible to make those adjustments via the pinch bolt?
Not really unless you have a barell adjuster n the mech as it is for fine adjustment and taking up stretchh it will always work just not very well across all the gears - I speak from experience....you can make it OK but not perfect
You can get an inline cable adjuster

You sure you haven't just unscrewed it completely?

I've got a feeling i've been a complete numpty, it doesn't seem to have snapped actually, what i thought were cracks seem to actually be the grooves that allows it connect with the shifter.
However, i still can't get it to screw back in, it just spins in both directions ๐
inline adjuster, and your troubles are over
APF
Take the cable and outer out and then try and thread the adjuster back in.
