Taking the rear hub of the road bike apart tonight, I find the axle broken - that explained the wobbly wheel - anyone know an on-line source of 130mm spacing axles hollow or solid, CRC, Wiggle and Evilbay have come up short...

I'd try SJS Cycles - usually good for that sort of thing
