Anyone know what the elevation gain in meters is per 10 mile lap? Roughly...

I'd be surprised if it's any more than 100m per lap but most are short steep climbs that drain your energy. One of the locals with a Garmin or similar might be able to tell you.

Last years first climb out of the arena field certainly did that.....

It's just under 300m/1000ft climbing per lap.

Gears for me...if the course is the same as last year i'm kinda hoping for slippy conditions as it will advantage the local singletrack riders over the no skills, mega fit types...

You're definitely quicker on it Darkcyan, depends if you can manage six hours pushing that gear ratio.

I'm hoping for the old course back as it was much more fun to ride; or certainly a change from last year which didn't make the most of Stanmer's better singletrack trails.

Two team pairs entered now for the Fat Bike Category, now that's where the real men are!! ๐Ÿ˜€

Given that Puffins finally seem to be on their way out of Sam's door I shall be doing at least one lap on a Fat Bike in the Solo Vets (40+) category.

I think I'll wait until I've ridden the thing before committing to more than that ๐Ÿ™‚

I hope the Singular Puffin has been worth the wait, they look fantastic I think and it should be fun round Stanmer woods. I'm very tempted by a Rooster if Sam makes one in a colour other than yellow.

If nothing else, I can fit 2.1" mud tyres on some standard rims to it and not worry about the frame getting gummed up with Stanmer mud ๐Ÿ™‚

Been thinking about this.

Anyone with a Fat Bike want to join me in a pair?

I've not got the legs to do Fat Bike solo but think it'll be interesting to ride for half the time.

I did 5 (or was it 6) laps solo last year so I'm not a racer. Having said that there's only 2 fat bike pairs entered currently so there's a possible 3rd place podium up for grabs - if you're expecting to win I'm not the team mate for you.

email in profile (and I'm hoping I can convert a solo entry to a fat bike pairs one if I talk nicely to Simon).

skellnoch - I'm pretty sure that one of the Upper Lodge Cottages at Stanmer is a small certificated site or something for the caravan club or camping and caravan club but google isn't helping. There;s certainly a regular change of campers in the garden there with motorhomes etc. If you can't find it this site http://www.caravanclub.co.uk/caravanclubapps/applications/uk-caravan-sites-and-parks/SiteDetails.aspx?csid=21975 is about 15 minutes away.

Wwasas, I'm considering building up a 29+ bike but not sure if I'll get it together before BigDog; if I do I'll give you a shout as 3" tyres fall into the Fat Bike Category ... Semi-Fat ??!!? ๐Ÿ˜† Will let you know.

I think our paths cross anyway from time to time on BrightonMTB Thursday night rides.

I'm sure we've met - it's just putting real names, faces and bikes to stw logins that is tricky sometimes ๐Ÿ™‚

I'll let you know if anything happens in the meantime.

Hey everyone,

Just hopped online to sign up and the male solo field is sold out. Gutted. Not sure whether to find a pairs partner or dress up as a woman and enter the females solo.

Question: What's the best way to guarantee a place on the Big Dog Podium

Answer: Buy a fat back - nailed on ๐Ÿ˜‰

I think the Retrobike category is the least represented (and cheapest to get kitted out for ๐Ÿ˜† )

Paceman - was talking to TimP a couple of nights ago and he said you might have got your 29+ together now? Still interested in a pairs entry?

I think we shared a gazebo last year - I had the green Scandal then.

I think he is!

We are at present gazebo less at the moment - one lap it was there in all it's splendor - the next it was a mangled wreck dumped 30 yards away in a field.

Any gazebo suggestions - won't the the same without base camp!

I'd be happy to throw in some money towards one of these if people were interested?

sides could be useful if it's a bit wet...

[edit] reads small print "Sidepanels sold separatly" oh well...

Wwaswas,

I'm up for that, what Fatbike have you got?
I've just had a three week lay off with broken ribs and won't be fully back on it for another two weeks I reckon (clipped my bars and went OTB and hit a tree in Stanmer Woods on the Junkyard trail).

I should be fine by BigDog though and itching to go on my new Surly Krampus. I also trained for and did the full off road Coast to Coast six weeks ago so I've got some fitness built up this year. It's just for fun anyway, I'm looking forward to skinning a few trail bikes on the fattie ๐Ÿ˜€

I see we're both signed up for Solo Vets 40+ at the moment. I wonder if they'll swap us into Fatbike pairs?

Cheers

Paceman

Cool - I think it'll be fun ๐Ÿ™‚

I'm just finishing building a Puffin.

I also trained for and did the full off road Coast to Coast six weeks ago

I rode to Sainsburys the other week when I could have driven ๐Ÿ˜‰

Here's last years effort from me: http://app.strava.com/activities/73661379/laps so you know what to expect in terms of tailing off of lap times as the day goes on. I've been doing the odd longer ride recently so hopefully riding in a pair will work better in terms of consistency...

I'll have a chat with Simon - I'm sure he'll be happy to move us - there's always a waiting list for solo. Did you register with your email from your stw profile - I'll copy you in using that address, anyway.

cheers

Luke

Cheers Luke, that's a good plan, and riding as a pair sounds like it could suit both of us. I'm looking forward to seeing the Puffin in the flesh once it's built, Singular make some beautiful frames I think.

I'll forward you my BigDog entry details when I hear from you via email.

Cheers

Nathan

TimP versus Darkcyan

... the Big Dog battle begins again, only two seconds over six hours separated them last year ๐Ÿ˜‰

Singlespeed - tick
Rigid - tick
Steel - tick

Will wheel size make the difference this year?

n.b. Paceman - you seem to have side stepped the tough guy challenge somehow?

N.b.b. heard a rumour Coldean side not in the course this year - good for us Tim ;-)though Badgers may be back in - not so good!
