With the aim of not being run over any recommendations for a bright rear light for commuting on unit main roads & country lanes??

I did some comparisons this week on some smaller units. FWIW, the Niterider Cherry Bomb is better than the Smart 1/2 watt rear. Better beam pattern I reckon.

The big Cateye LD1100 must still be the Daddy though.

Smart 1/2 watt +1 - you can't go wrong with a couple of these - especially at £8 each from Wiggle!. I use 3 on the pitch black Herefordshire country lanes.

like following a 747

I thought flashing taillights on widebody jetliners contravened British Standards.

I could be wrong though.

I really like the Knog Bullfrog. Maybe not as bright as some others, but the sheer convenience of not needing any kind of bracket, being able to fit and remove in seconds but staying put when on the bike is a major plus for me. I've got more than one bike, so not needing extra brackets sold them to me straight off. I use a Toad as well.

The knogs are indeed convenient, and ALL the cool kids have them on their fixie bandwagon bikes, but they are at the bottom of the light-tech pile: not a lens to be seen resulting in bare LEDs that throw out their light in a rather untidy, undisciplined, and downright lazy way.

Cateye brackets are cheap, easy to fit and the new ones are very well thought out.

I never just use one light when commuting, I'd rather have at least 2 on in case one fails. I use 2 Cateye LD1100 and just bought a fibre flare for the chainstay. I also use a wee flasher on my lid. I'd rather someone laughed at me for being lit up like a xmas tree than say 'sorry mate I didn't see you'.

I have a Blackburn Mars 3.0 which is impressive. The light comes wih a lifetime warranty, which is useful as the switch is a bit hit and miss.

I have just ordered 2 smart 1/2 watt from Wiggle

I did a bit of research, the Cherry bomb seems to be as brigh as the smart with better pattern, but it gets through batteries a lot quicker than the Smart.

So I figured, 2 smart lights would be cheaper in the long run than regularly replacing batteries on the cherry bomb, might be wrong though.

Anyone ever weatherproofed a rear light? If so, how. Tape around the edge/join doesn't seem to work.

+1 more for the smart, they are very bright and at £8 its worth getting 2, i have one on my bag and the LD1100 on the bike at the mo.

The smart 1/2 watt is good, especially for £8 - though not as good as the one that comes with the 1/2 watt bspoke set with a front light, which is wider.
