What's this like? I'm looking for somewhere family friendlyish in South Wales for a bit of a spin, is this suitable? Can I get round with a trailer? Looking at the website it shows 500m of climbing in less than 10km, which seems rather a lot to me for a beginners loop- 10% average climbing assuming half the distance is up.
Wife on a hybrid, kids 3 and 5 on Islabikes (one Rothan), though I'd expect (and am used to) carrying two bikes and two kids in a trailer for a fair bit). Are there any escape routes/short cuts?

The reason the green is often raved about is that it's that rare thing; a route that is in between your normal green/blue fire-road only trails and a red. It sounds to me though that all the things that make it so good might not make it ideal for what you want though. It's definitely "first steps into proper mountain biking" rather than "nice day out in the forest".

If you wanted to abort early then if you take a route map you could probably find shortcuts via the fire roads;

Route map also shows the gradient profile.

Could try here:

Its got lots of trails that are relativley flat through forests and dunes and beaches. The green at Brechfa looks a little like this:
