Just broken my lock open with a car jack having lost the key; anyone else used this method?

not personally but i lent the carjack to a friend so he could break his lock open,
that why they advise you to lock up using 2 different types of locks as most thieves only carry one method of attack.

Given it took me half an hour I expect the youth have got faster and more discreet methods; the local fire station advised several other methods over the phone before a friend suggested this
