Ive never had Hydralic Brakes till this bike so just wondered what are the signs that Brake Discs need replacing ?
Ive gone through a couple of sets of pads, so is it like a car replacing them when theres a "lip" on the disc, or is it just a routine job.
They are Avid Elixr 3 brakes on an Orange G3.
Thanks.
for wear you will probably notice a lip from the spoke part where the pad doesnt rub to the friction area.
or when you have major scoring
or if you bend it too bad
edit: there is probably a thickness limit somewhere.
In all my years riding discs, I've only ever changed one because it was worn. That was a rear avid on the wife's bike. She's since learned to brake properly.
They usually have a thickness etched onto the disc some where. I find they start to warp when they get too thin
Replace them once there is a noticeabe deep groove worn into the middle of the braking surface.
I generally get a season of Alpine riding out of a cheap set. Hope V2 floating rotors have now done nearly 2 full seasons, but definitely getting a bit mis-shapen now.
I have seen quite a few discs fail spectacularly from being allowed to get too thin!
