[#879990]

Ok, I seem to have developed a rather large amount of play, accompanied by horrible creaking from my BB on my Five.

It seems to be a RaceFace X type on Raceface EvolveXC cranks.

I have heard these aren't seviceable, so I guess I need to replace it.. so

Any advice on what to replace it with to be compatible with my cranks, and if poss what model/type do I need to get it to fit in my Five?

Also tools needed to do it becuase I probably won't have them?

(sorry if this is noobie question, but I am noobie... )

Doing some research, and thinking of getting a hope BB, seems like it will be compatible... Anybody know what size I will need? (its for an Orange Five)

Right, steer well clear of Race Face BBs, I speak from experience when I say they're short lived.

Otherwise, if you're on a budget then Shimano SLX / XT units are very good and fit your cranks perfectly. I've had a year's daily use out of an old XT unit which is more than double what I achieved with Race Face.

Hope units have stainless steel bearings and are apparently very, very good indeed, but it's not a type I've yet tried.

You'll need a 68/73mm one, (standard MTB jobby). Should fit no problem.

Toolwise you'll need a BB cup spanner. Remember that the right hand cup is left hand threaded, so will tighten/loosen the opposite way to normal. There's a handy reminder etched into the Hope cups that tells you which way to tighten it. I think you'll only need an 8mm allen key to remove the crank bolt, and remove the cranks. Might be a bit awkward getting the axle out of the BB though.

Actually, now I think about it, have you checked that it's definitely play in the BB, and not just the cranks coming a bit loose?

If you do end up replacing the BB, be VERY careful, as it's fairly easy to get the cups cross-threaded when you install them, and that can potentially write off the frame!

Thanks for the advice Davy, I;ll double check it is fully tight before parting with some cash, although i've riden it hard for 9 months now, so it i is probably due for replacement. Thanks for the warning about the cross threading too!

Well mr Oldfart, I did consider that, but most things on bikes seem easy to do with a few pointers, and if you get the right tools for the job hence asking here ๐Ÿ˜‰

Anyhow, I now have a very nice ceramic hope BB all fitted and running as smoooooth as.

Thanks for the advice guys
