A little sanity check please in case I'm doing something daft I can't see past.
I have an aftermarket HTII bottom bracket (not from Barnoldwsick!). Frame has a 68mm BB shell. Deore (M590) HTII crank running a single ring.
When I fit the BB with 1 spacer NDS, 2 spacers DS to take up the full width of the crank spindle (correct, no?) The BB's internal sleeve doesn't span the gap between cups leaving the bearings open to various crud - Bearings died after only 5-6 rides.
I also tried fitting it (one short ride only) with fewer spacers such that the sleeve did seal between the cups, but that results in ~5mm side-to-side play across the BB spindle, obviously not good.
Is the sleeve the wrong length and I need a longer one? Or what...? I'm confused (doesn't always take a lot tbf) !
Thanks,
Chris.
How do you know the sleeve is too short? Surely you can't see it when it's fitted.
(Or are you measuring it all outside of the frame?)
Also - have you a chain device of some sort fitted round the BB?
If you're getting side to side play without the spacers, that kind of implies they should be there. The sleeve should fit. Sorry this isn't much help!
1 NDS and 2 DS is the standard for 68 mm shells. Leave a spacer off either side for 73 mm shells and the BB still fits
Must admit have never had a sleeve that was too short who is this aftermarket BB manufacturer
Clean the insides of the bearing cups (where the sleeve sits) then put grease on the ends of the sleeve. Mount everything then take apart, you should see grease on the insides of the cups. That will tell you if the sleeve is long enough.
And bearings dying after five or six rides?
Thanks guys...
Scotroutes - Can see/feel inside the sleeve with the BB fitted but not the crank.
Philjunior - That was what I thought!
Rocketman - Gusset EXT24.
Whitestone - See above - Sleeve definitely doesn't reach! Yes, bearings began creaking with each pedal stroke after about 5 rides. 1 of these was short but was with the sideways play in the spindle (had chosen making the sleeve meet the cups over the correct number of spacers without envisaging the side-to-side play issue) I rectified this asap once I spotted it but next few rides were a bit mucky (I use a hose but not a jet wash for cleaning) Upon disassembly the inner side of (particularly the NDS) bearing was pretty grubby and the bearing running rough.
So, longer sleeve we think? I've emailed the manuf., distributor and shop in question but had no response!
Sent photos to Ison, after a phone call and they sent me a longer sleeve. Not fitted yet but looks about right... (although they did ask that I go through the shop in future)
Will post back for info if it doesn't work.
