I've a Genesis Croix de Fer 10 which came with a square taper BB. The drivetrain is shot so I'm replacing all that but while I'm at it can I remove the BB and replace it with a Hollowtech II BB? A quick search seems to suggest I can. - I know the crankset won't be compatible but that's getting replaced as well so not an issue.

Hollow tech 2 is threaded so you'll be fine. Just make sure the threads match. Yours will be British threaded.

Standard 68mm BSA bottom bracket shell - the only type of crank that you'd have trouble with is BB30, virtually everything else is compatible.

The main "problem" is actually whether to stick with nine speed or move to ten speed. The problem is really one of cost as I'd need a new shifter if I moved to ten speed. Since it's my commuter/winter bike I'm not that fussed really, it would be nice if it was ten speed as then all my bikes would be compatible.

At the moment it will cost £170 to replace everything (BB, crankset, chain, derailleur, cassette), well apart from a new rear wheel 🙄 which is also on its way out so might as well do that at the same time. A new set of shifters adds £70 or so.

Just do it all, buy a complete Tiagra or 105 groupset and then just sell the bits you don't need, it'll almost certainly work out cheaper.
