Those things that you need to buy every now and again which are not much to get excited about.
I'll start with the bottom bracket. Compared to say a new XT mech, an XT bottom bracket isn't anything to get too excited about. You don't see it, and what you can see of it are just 2 little bands of metal at the bottom of your bike. It just sits there doing its job with little attention. No fancy moving parts, just a couple of bearings. Apart from fancy ceramic bearings, some nice colouring, machining and seals there's not much more you can do to a BB to sex them up.
Any others? Please let me know what else you think is a dull, and often under-rated component, maybe we'll try and find some exciting aspects about them along the way.
Shimano skewers- even Deore are ace
Gear cable outers. Some gore ones i got made a BIG difference.
bar plugs.
Bottle cage bolts. Yet somehow replacing the heavy steel ones with pretty anodised aluminium ones is incredibly satisfying.
Northwind - you've inspired me to get some black ones!
At least you can see the coloured part of a BB if you know where to look.
I spent £20 on Hope phenolic pistons. They work better than the old aluminium ones, but no one can see them.
£40 for a pair of Ward Industries titanium Egg Beater spindles as well.
Another expensive bling upgrade that can't be seen. 🙄
when you're skint... so you've tried to spec your bike to last... and then over the years you've cleaned and checked and stripped down and cleaned and checked and lubed everything on it a gazillion times.. they're all boring..
I want ti and bling and xtr and easton haven carbon wheels..
humbug

The weight reduction will blow your mind
waxoyl inside a steel frame
not really a component but all the same - tubeless. after all the faff and mess of doing it for the first time you get a great sense of satisfaction when it actually works but then you can't see it!

MTGraham - how did you get on with yours?
Seat posts. I hate the things, it's just a pipe with a clamp on it.
i have to say deore skewers also..
I've gotten rid of all the bling ones i had..and got deore ones off ebay.
Way better in function/and price.
Shimano square taper BBs + 1 million.
Seat collars. Star nut thingys that go in the steerer. Jockey wheels.
