Sorry but are you for real? We actually went to the shop for some ciggies. No I didn't travel to just go to the shop. Behave!

Waiting a couple of weeks on a £10 shirt hardly warrants me being called a proper tool.

No shipping goods doesn't make you a tool. Not replying to any emails is what makes you a tool. It makes people understandably nervous. I'm genuinely sorry if you've had issues or other commitments, that's perfectly understandable, but it takes seconds to keep people in the loop and then everyone's happy.

If you've got a work account you check regularly, why not use that for correspondence?

I was watching the 'remake' Total Recall trailer just now-this all seems a bit familiar.

Perhaps bobbyG really doesn't know who he is?

Is his wife really hot but not his wife! Oh my god!

Still no goods - despite many assurances...and no reponse to emails

So if bobbyg81 'martyn gray' re-surfaces offering stuff for sale proceed with caution

Unlucky! The 'accidental' posting in another users identity was a novelty her ethough. (checks email from my seller, 9 days, readies querying email to go)

johnsquiresplectrum hasn't sent my item or responded to emails since Easter, and I'm not the only one. His paypal name is very similar to Martyn Gray too.

The world is full of ......,they just come in different shapes, sizes and user names. 😆
nsaints, I really do feel sorry for you as you are a true gentleman and dont deserve to be treated this way as no one does.
As previously stated, if people have issues sending parts that have been paid for, then please have the common decency to communicate with the buyer and explain your reasons to allow the buyer to make what ever decision necessary to bring things to a positive conclusion.

Thanks for your kind words chainslapp.

I was thinking what I did wrong - I checked the guy had previous posting history, very polite emails, seemed totally genuine.....I was sucked in to what clearly was a lie

We're all critical at times of paypal, but darn it, I wish I'd paid the fees so I could make a claim on this occasion 🙁

I honestly thought that when I joined stw.com, that all you lot were middle aged / middle class upstanding citizens and true to their word.

BUT I have seen more scamming going on at stw.com over the years than sdh.com and bike radar put together.

Something has to be more clear in writing for scammers from the admin/mods. Play the scamming card and forfeit your privacy of full name and contact number.
I personally would like to see it a step further where Paypal own the UK Police force and that the Army own the UK Police force and get busy on your scamming asses.

Phew! Glad I got that off my chesticles. 😳

And address perhaps?

Or take PayPal to court and make them give you all the info on the tea-leaf.

Why not ask for a piccy of said item , being held by the seller , outside his house , Or a mates /Mums if he is worried about having his garage emptied. Then post a cheque to that address . Google streetveiw will tell you if its the actual house , or a crock of poo. Hell , if it a frame / forks get the seller to hold a A4 receipt with 'ASR5 frame sold to Houns for £ 700 dated '

You get the sellers mugshot , postal addy , photo , to see the goods , plus a virtual receipt .

Feel free to flame away

Ok , So you might have to wait a week , better than being robbed .

I think paying by PPG is a mistake with people you've not dealt with before but I'm as guilty as others of doing it to save a couple of quid.

I'm not fond of companies or organisations trying to save people from themselves but if I were STW, I'd ban asking for PPG in the classifieds to save these sort of situations or at least give those scammed some sort of recourse
Sellers just need to price things to cover their costs in the first place

Simple remedy: Classifieds selling should be for Premium menbers only.

(a) STW get a fee for running the Forum (apparently, there is only a small handful of donations each month)
(b) STW will have postal addresses so there can be some follow up if needed.

I think the problem there would be they'd have to take a position and act on a dispute, I wouldn't want to to that if I were them

I agree - but maybe if folk knew that they could be traced, the risk would be enough?

Surely the sensible thing to do is pay via paypal? The fees are only a few quid and are clearly worth it when you're dealing with Bobby Bellends.

Retro bike have a better system....each user has a feedback thread, I think that's been discussed on STW before as a suggestion....At. A minimum this should be replicated on STW. There's no cost involved, easy. Not a bomb proof solution, but better than nothing

i sometimes ask for buyers to post up on the selling thread to guve feedback on what i have sold....then potential buyers can see im a good boy...

realman springs to mind though so its not all easy to see if someone is genuine.

always had excellent experiences on here though, last buyer even gave me more money than i asked for as he detected i was in a bit of turmoil over selling the item!!! stw peeps can be very good...

Not sure it's relevant but I avoid people who sell lots of non bike things and I seem to remember not liking the look of BoobyG's threads.

Why "ban" PPG, as Im quite happy to receive and pay via this method as I know quite a few forum members. Its all down to your own discretion at the end of the day.

Banning "paypal gift"?

How are you going to do that? Why not just ban the scammers instead?

ban paypal gift................what a ****ing stupid idea.
i have been selling stuff on here for 6 or so yrs, i always use ppg and in all that time i have never had 1 complaint.

use your head, try to buy off regular forum users, never buy from obvious traders or new members with no forum history.

well you obviously can't ban it technically, but you can officially tell buyers not to use it.

How are you going to do that? Why not just ban the scammers instead?

How do you ban a scammer before he's scammed? someone will get their fingers burnt.

I usually post quickly, & email a pic of the posting receipt. It takes less than a minute to do on a modern phone. Appreciate not everyone works 2min walk from a PO though, but if you can post on here you can email an update. Likewise posting a reply on the original ad. Start closing the Classifieds to Selling only type users would be a start. Classifieds for paid members perhaps.

why is it a stupid idea? with PPG you have no comeback at all, its a scammers dream, with a normal paypal payment the seller is held to account.

Just because you use it perfectly doesn't mean everyone does.

As others have said, that's not really the answer. The problem is, a lot of the methods other forums use to stop this happening, such as the feedback system on HDUK, just don't exist on STW due to the forum being so....erm...[s]basic[/s] [s]1997[/s]

it is a scammers dream for a very very small percentage on here.
seriously how many people have been scammed?
how many people have had a very good service from someone........if i posted on every good deal, there would be pages and pages.

Very true ton, but it does happen occasionally, so something needs to be done.

As you said though, if a new member with no forum history asked for PayPal gift, you really should be able to smell a rat

exactly mate.......all people need to do is use a bit of common sense.
look how long they have been posting/what they post/if they only sell stuff.

nothing needs to be done. The responsibility lies solely with the buyer, not STW, not the mods, not paypal. The internet is full of far more well organised and serious scams and frauds than the odd dodgy STW deal (gumtree is rife with money-forwarding scams, often with details lifted from genuine adverts), but if you are "sophisticated" enough to use the internet you should be able to protect yourself.

Dont buy from new members. Dont use PP gift- pay the fees yourself. Search forum history. Google the seller. Dont use western union.

Ive used STW for a couple of years (used to piggy back my other half's account when my original one disappeared after the hack) but I was buying and selling stuff on the MTBR forum in the late 90's when no one had heard of ebay and before paypal. Never been ripped off, never had a negative experience (a few underwhelming experiences where my definition of "mint" was different to that of the seller, but purely subjective rather than being had).

As somebody who has only ever brought off the classifieds and never sold anything, can I say that I have not yet had any hassles, however these days I do tend to look at the forum history of the seller and will now only buy off of someone who has some history on here. A while ago I enquired about a turbo trainer that was for sale only to receive an email back saying that it had already been promised to someone, in theory sold pending collection, however if I wanted to offer more money then I could have it. Needless to say I didn't reply to that email.

Oh and I have brought of ton (set of Mary bars) good communication and prompt delivery so all happy here

Sad to say but it is now buyers beware.

However as a seller surely if you post in here for sale you then you have to make time to check emails etc, I don't expect prompt delivery on everything but a bit of communication and being kept informed of what's what saves a load of issues, even if it's a case of "sh*t sorry mate, hectic week, l try and get it posted later on" wouldn't go amiss

It was me that suggested STW ban sellers asking for PPG

This was really for their sake to try and stop some of the scam threads, what buyers and sellers do once they are in negotiations is obviously up to them.
But if they've been done and used PPG after being advised against it, at least STW can say they did what they could.
It can't be good for this sites reputation sometimes with some of the threads about scams I've seen

so once again, I didn't suggest banning PPG [only PP can do that] but rather ban sellers asking for it on the sale thread and maybe STW putting a disclaimer up about it on all sale threads

Just ban the for sale if its that much of a problem.

Most of the time scammers are easy to spot. ie 5 threads all in for sale.
